L'histoire est digne d'une légende. Un petit garçon de Quassabine (Syrie), né près d'Ougarit, où demeurent les traces de la première écriture, devient poète et choisit le nom d'un dieu païen, Adonis. Cet entretien évoque toutes les facettes du poète, ses années d'apprentissage, sa vie au Liban, ses liens avec de grands poètes français comme André du Bouchet, Alain Bosquet, Jacques Prévert ou encore Henri Michaux. Il retrace son parcours littéraire depuis la création de la revue Shi 'r (Poésie), qui lui permit d'affirmer son génie et de contribuer à la modernisation de la poésie arabe, jusqu'à l'analyse des éléments pré-socratiques et nietzschéens de sa pensée. Adonis rompt en effet avec le système platonicien, qui désigne le corps comme tombeau de l'âme, et rétablit le corps et la chair. Mais on le sait aussi rebelle, poète de la révolte, et c'est en homme libre qu'il aborde également des thèmes comme l'orientalisme, la question de la femme, l'érotisme, la transgression, l'exil, la religion. La forme de l'entretien ne pouvait pas mieux convenir qu'à cet homme au contact duquel on comprend immédiatement que la pensée est, par essence, mouvement. Le jeu des questions et des réponses, des arguments et des doutes bouscule alors les idées préconçues, les a priori, les dogmes.
