La grammatica non funziona in modo uniforme: in alcuni casi ci impone regole non negoziabili, in altri ci lascia ampi margini di scelta. La struttura dei suoni, delle sillabe e delle parole, per esempio, risponde a regole rigide; all'altro estremo, un testo è il risultato delle scelte di chi lo ha scritto. Nella frase, che è lo snodo strategico dell'espressione, i due modi di funzionare si danno il cambio. "Le regole e le scelte" di Michele Prandi descrive le risorse dell'italiano tenendo conto degli sviluppi della ricerca linguistica, nello sforzo di affrontare compiti eterogenei con strumenti concettuali differenziati, e di accompagnare l'inventario delle risorse grammaticali con un'esplicitazione sistematica delle basi concettuali dell'analisi. In due punti l'impianto della grammatica si discosta dallo schema tradizionale. La morfologia è spostata alla fine del volume, nella convinzione che lo studio delle classi di parole abbia il valore di un bilancio del loro funzionamento nella frase semplice e complessa, nel testo e nella comunicazione. L'analisi delle relazioni transfrastiche come la causa o la concessione, tradizionalmente parte dell'analisi del periodo, è preceduta dallo studio della coerenza e della coesione testuali. In questo modo la descrizione delle risorse testuali impegnate con i mezzi grammaticali in compiti funzionali comuni non è un capitolo separato, ma parte integrante della descrizione della lingua.

Language standardization is an ongoing process based on the notions of linguistic correctness and models. This manual contains thirty-six chapters that deal with the theories of linguistic norms and give a comprehensive up-to-date description and analysis of the standardization processes in the Romance languages. The first section presents the essential approaches to the concept of linguistic norm ranging from antiquity to the present, and includes individual chapters on the notion of linguistic norms and correctness in classical grammar and rhetoric, in the Prague School, in the linguistic theory of Eugenio Coseriu, in sociolinguistics as well as in pragmatics, cognitive and discourse linguistics. The second section focuses on the application of these notions with respect to the Romance languages. It examines in detail the normative grammar and the normative dictionary as the reference tools for language codification and modernization of those languages that have a long and well-established written tradition, i.e. Romanian, Italian, French, Catalan, Spanish, and Portuguese.
