Thinking through Translation with Metaphors explores a wide range of metaphorical figures used to describe the translation process, from Aristotle to the present. Most practitioners and theorists of translation are familiar with a number of metaphors for translation, such as the metaphor of the bridge, following in another's footsteps, performing a musical score, changing clothes, or painting a portrait; yet relatively little attention has been paid to what these metaphorical models reveal about how we conceptualize translation. Drawing on insights from recent developments in metaphor theory, contributors to this volume reveal how central metaphorical language has been to translation studies at all periods of time and in various cultures. Metaphors have played a key role in shaping the way in which we understand translation, determining what facets of the translation process are deemed to be important and therefore merit study, and aiding in the training of successive generations of translators and theorists. Drawing on a core corpus consisting of six Scientific American articles in the fields of neurobiology and biotechnology dating from 2004, along with their translations into Chinese, French, German, Italian, Polish and Russian, Shuttleworth provides a data-driven and theoretically informed picture of the processes that underpin metaphor translation. How do the experiences of people who have different bodies (deaf versus hearing) shape their thoughts and metaphors? Do different linguistic modes of expression (signed versus spoken) have a shaping force as well? This book investigates the metaphorical production of culturally-Deaf translators who work from English to American Sign Language (ASL). It describes how Event Structure Metaphors are handled across languages of two different modalities. Through the use of corpus-based evidence, several specific questions are addressed: are the main branches of Event Structure Metaphors – the Location and Object branches – exhibited in ASL? Are these two branches adequate to explain the event-related linguistic metaphors identified in the translation corpus? To what extent do translators maintain, shift, add, and omit expressions of these metaphors? While answering these specific questions, this book makes a significant elaboration to the two-branch theory of Event Structure Metaphors. It raises larger questions of how bilinguals handle competing conceptualizations of events and contributes to emerging interest in how body specificity, linguistic modes, and cultural context affect metaphoric variability.

It sheds light on the tension between 'change' and 'preservation' in religious language. More specifically, the volume focuses on metaphor and translation as two sources of linguistic (semantic) change, which both play an important role in the continuous process of interpreting and re-interpreting discourse, i.e. the Bible. Although operating on different grounds with different intensity and range, both processes face the same challenge of finding new, historically and co(n)textually appropriate linguistic means to express a complex content. With regard to the cultural (religious) and historical embeddedness of different communities, the requirement of linguistic appropriateness inevitably leads to a continuous process of semantic adjustment ('reinterpretation') of earlier versions of a text. In dealing with religious language, however, this process of semantic change, which from a linguistic point of view may seem inevitable, sometimes faces severe opposition from the religious community itself. This very tension between the natural process of semantic change and the strong preserving power relating to the sacred content of religious language renders religious language a unique object of study for linguists, theologians, exegetes and others.
