Sono fondatrici di stirpi, profetesse, donne qualunque che si trovano però a svolgere un ruolo cruciale, memorabile nella storia della loro comunità e della loro religione. Sono donne che hanno la forza di essere protagoniste del proprio destino. Osano sfidare Dio, come Eva, la madre dei viventi, che trasgredisce l’ordine divino e si assume la responsabilità di una vita autonoma; osano opporsi all’autorità maschile, come Miriam che rivendica il proprio ruolo di profetessa con Mosè, o come Giuditta che uccide il nemico Oloferne; osano anteporre alle leggi umane principi superiori, come le levatrici che salvano Mosè contravvenendo ai decreti del Faraone, o come Ester che aiuta il suo popolo sfidando l’impero persiano; osano piegare le leggi maschili a favore dei diritti delle donne, come fanno Tamar e Rut. Compiono scelte ardite ma sono ugualmente difese e accolte da Dio. Oltre a loro ci sono poi donne che hanno interpretato i racconti biblici, teologhe che hanno letto diversamente i testi sacri tramandandone un’altra versione. La presunta inferiorità femminile ricavata dall’interpretazione di certi passi della Bibbia è servita soprattutto a legittimare discriminazione e subalternità della donna, ma non è scontato che questo ne sia l’autentico e unico senso. Adriana Valerio, tramite una lettura di genere delle vicende di alcune figure femminili della Bibbia, dimostra infatti che la si può leggere liberandola dalle categorie patriarcali e riconsegnando alle donne la dignità e il messaggio salvifico rivolto anche a loro dalla fede cristiana.
