Although labor is usually the unique asset upon which poor people can make a living, little is known about the functioning of labor markets in Sub-Saharan Africa. The purpose of this volume is to contribute to the building of knowledge in this area. In this book, the authors use a unique set of identical and simultaneous labor force surveys conducted in seven capitals of Western Africa, as well as in some other African countries (Cameroon, Madagascar, Democratic Republic of Congo) in the 2000s. They present innovative and original results on how people are faring in these labour markets, using up-to-date econometric and statistical methods. Because so little is known about labor markets in the region, each chapter starts with detailed descriptive statistics that aim to shed light onto specific aspects of African urban labor markets. Comparisons between the ten cities are systematically carried out. Descriptive sections are followed by in-depth analyses on various issues. The book is divided into four parts that examine 13 topics. Part I presents the main stylised facts, which are investigated further in a more analytical way throughout the volume. Part II focuses on job quality and labor market conditions, such as unemployment and underemployment, vulnerability, and job satisfaction. Part III explores the many dimensions of labor market inequalities through various lenses, such as returns on education, segmentation, life-cycle inequality (with a particular focus on old age), inter-generational mobility, time related inequality, and gender and ethnic earnings discrimination. Part IV addresses some key coping mechanisms and private responses, with a focus on migration and child labor. The book concludes with recommendations for future research.

Regional trade agreements have expanded exponentially over the past decade, and have become a significant, if controversial, factor in the expanse of economic globalization. Social Regionalism in the Global Economy attempts to take a fresh, interdisciplinary approach to addressing labour regulation by drawing upon insights from industrial relations, comparative capitalism, and new governance schools of thought. It stands for the proposition that an interdisciplinary study of regional regulation holds the potential to offer a fuller account of social regionalism. Its focus is to consider how institutions and labour market actors reconstruct and renegotiate regulatory space in a changing economic environment characterized by regional impulses. It argues that there is a dynamic interplay between institutions and actors of social regulation. This interplay occurs at many levels. The book therefore maps both how actors shape institutions as well as how institutions shape social actors’ ability to affect regulatory processes. The editors bring together leading international specialists willing to move beyond textual analyses of regional agreements to offer alternative accounts of regional integration. The work emphasizes that institutional context and social actors at multiple governance levels are integral to the progressive construction and regulation of regional space. It further contributes to the literature by combining insights from overlooked regional entities in transition and developing countries with original analyses from the European Union and the NAFTA. Cet ouvrage nous fait découvrir l’Organisation pour l’Harmonisation en Afrique du Droit des Affaires (OHADA) créée par le Traité de Port-Louis (île Maurice) du 19 octobre 1993 et entré en vigueur le 18 septembre 1995. Afin de créer un espace économique doté d’une sécurité juridique susceptible d’attirer les investissements étrangers et de consolider les investissements nationaux, les États membres se sont fortement inspirés du droit des affaires français, le contexte socio-économique africain n’ayant pas été suffisamment pris en compte dans la mise en place de ce dispositif. Le tissu économique des pays membres de l’OHADA se caractérise par la prédominance du secteur informel sur le secteur formel. Cette étude nous présente le cas du Cameroun dont le secteur informel compte un peu plus de 90% des emplois. Ainsi, bien que ce secteur soit le moteur du développement économique en Afrique, le législateur de l’OHADA n’en a pas suffisamment tenu compte lors de l’élaboration des actes normatifs. Le cadre juridique est donc inadapté au secteur informel. Or, pour que l’intégration économique africaine réussisse (c'est l'un des objectifs de l’OHADA), il est nécessaire de considérer tous les acteurs de la vie économique. L’étude vise en ce sens l’identification des mesures qui pourraient être prises dans le cadre de l’espace OHADA d’une part et dans le cadre national camerounais d’autre part, pour élaborer une législation appropriée au secteur informel, le résultat recherché étant la migration progressive des opérateurs du secteur informel vers le secteur formel de l’économie. Cet ouvrage intéressera les magistrats, les avocats spécialisés dans le droit des affaires, les chefs d’entreprise africains, mais également les professionnels de l’économie comme les banquiers, ou encore les professeurs et leurs étudiants.
