Joseph Fontanet ayant été l'un des principaux maîtres d'œuvre de la politique contractuelle dans le domaine social, de 1969 à 1972, ce livre est - en partie - l'explication de sa doctrine ; mais le champ qu'il couvre en réalité embrasse la totalité du politique. L'ouvrage et l'auteur sont difficiles à classer dans les catégories toutes faites. Mais peut-il en être autrement, quand on prend le risque de refuser le conformisme ? Et quand on croit que les voies d'avenir sont à frayer hors des sentiers battus ? L'originalité de l'ouvrage de Joseph Fontanet, est d'affirmer que le désarroi des sociétés contemporaines résulte d'une défaillance de notre intelligence. Alors que ces sociétés se "complexifiaient", nous avons continué à leur appliquer des concepts et des méthodes forgés pour expliquer et maîtriser les phénomènes simples de la mécanique et de la physique classiques. Un nouveau modèle social réclame une nouvelle grille de lecture, de nouvelles catégories mentales. Joseph Fontanet montre qu'on les trouve dans la "théorie des systèmes", qui permet de relever le "défi de la complexité". Il utilise cette "boîte à outils intellectuels", pour renouveler l'analyse de la décentralisation, de l'économie mixte, des relations sociales, de l'organisation internationale, montrant pourquoi et comment le spontané et le programmé, le conflit et la coopération sont intimement liés, dans un "système" vivant, et à quelles conditions la participation et le pluralisme peuvent y être rendus viables et féconds. Joseph Fontanet croit qu'il s'agit là d'une théorie englobante, et conclut avec optimisme qu'elle devrait faciliter le dialogue social, en relativisant les points de vue antagonistes déchiffrés à l'aide d'un même code. Un livre qui sort des lieux communs et dérangera bien des points de vue, de droite et de gauche.

I. Some Characteristic Features of the Passage From the 18th to the 19th Century 1. The following notes grew out of reflections which first led us to send out invitations to, and call for papers for, an interdisciplinary workshop, which took place in Bielefeld from 27th to 30th November, 1979. The status and character of this preface is therefore somewhat ambiguous: on the one hand it does not comment extensively on the articles to follow, on the other hand it could not have been conceived and written in the way it was without knowledge of all the contributions to this volum- which contains revised editions of papers for the workshop - nor without the cooperation of the participants in the above mentioned symposium. Furthermore, although the following may sound slightly programmatic and summary, we hope that it will be sufficiently explicit to provide some key words and concepts useful for further scholarly work. Ancient religions are definitely complex systems of gods, which resist our understanding. Divine names provide fundamental keys to gain access to the multiples ways gods were conceived, characterized, and organized. Among the names given to the gods many of them refer to spaces: cities, landscapes, sanctuaries, houses, cosmic elements. They reflect mental maps which need to be explored in order to gain new knowledge on both the structure of the pantheons and the human agency in the cultic dimension. By considering the intersection between naming and mapping, this book opens up new perspectives on how tradition and innovation, appropriation and creation play a role in the making of polytheistic and monotheistic religions. Far from being confined to sanctuaries, in fact, gods dwell in human environments in multiple ways. They move into imaginary spaces and explore the cosmos. By proposing a new and interdiciplinary angle of approach, which involves texts, images, spatial and archeaeological data, this book sheds light on ritual practices and representations of gods in the whole Mediterranean, from Italy to Mesopotamia, from Greece to North Africa and Egypt. Names and spaces enable to better define, differentiate, and connect gods.
