En réactualisant la question de la présence du platonisme dans les écrits de jeunesse de Heidegger (1919-1929), cet ouvrage comble une lacune importante dans les recherches heideggériennes, qui, jusqu'à présent, ont surtout souligné son anti-platonisme. L'auteur défend au contraire la thèse selon laquelle le rôle de la critique heideggérienne du platonisme est de préparer une réappropriation originale de Platon. Dans un premier temps, il se penche sur la déconstruction heideggérienne des formes modernes du platonisme, que Heidegger appelle «platonisme tout à fait banal» à cause de leur caractère ahistorial, théorique et formel. Il met ensuite en lumière l'influence structurelle de la République de Platon sur l'ontologie fondamentale de Etre et Temps. Mais au Bien que Platon introduit dans l'allégorie, Heidegger substitue la temporalité comme horizon ultime du sens de l'être. Finalement, l'étude met en relief une présupposition latente dans l'oeuvre de Heidegger selon laquelle le Sophiste et le Théétète contiennent en germe les idées principales de l'analytique existentiale et de l'ontologie fondamentale. La réappropriation heideggérienne de Platon consiste ainsi dans le passage d'un platonisme théorique à un platonisme pratico-existential.

Heidegger has often been considered as the proponent of the end of metaphysics in the post-Hegelian philosophy, due to his persistent attempts to overcome the onto-theological framework of traditional metaphysics. Yet, this dismissal of metaphysical, theological, and religious motives is deeply ambiguous since new forms of metaphysical and religious experience re-emerge in his philosophical works. Heidegger shares this ambiguous relation to the notions of faith and religion with authors such as Nietzsche and Wittgenstein whose works are also marked by a critique of metaphysics and by a characteristic rethinking of the role of faith and religion. In fact, all three still remain, among other things, reference points for contemporary philosophical debates relating to the phenomenon of religion and faith. A l'idee socratique que pour faire le bien il faut le connaitre, Platon ajoute une philosophie des Idees qui inscrit le Bien dans un ciel intelligible et en infere toute l'echelle des valeurs. Comme cela ne va pas sans problemes, Ronald Bonan montre les difficultes generees par cet acte platonicien d'institution: le statut de la Verite, la possibilite de l'atteindre ou non par la science, la nature de nos erreurs auxquelles correspondent nos errances, le statut epineux du non-etre. Difficultes qui, avant d'occuper toute la metaphysique occidentale, mettent deja le platonisme en crise et donnent lieu a des dialogues puissamment speculatifs qui tentent de les surmonter. Convaincu de la destination politique du philosophe, Platon replace tous ces problemes dans le cadre de la Cite qu'il pense comme le meilleur instrument de la formation (paideia) de l'homme. La politique n'est donc, pas plus que l'ethique, separable de l'ontologie. Le livre montre ainsi les prolongements scientifiques, ethiques et politiques des theses metaphysiques, avant de se clore sur la posterite de Platon, sur les lignes de force qui organisent son heritage.
