C'est, à l'inverse, sa capacité d'adaptation qui frappe l'observateur et son poids continue de peser dans la vie sociale de l'Inde, non pas comme une survivance pesante, mais bien comme un des lieux où se joue la modernité. Le présent ouvrage tente de faire le bilan de cette institution si particulière et tâche d'en présenter, avec clarté, les différents aspects ainsi que ses fondements religieux.
