En 1952 était promulgué le Code du travail en Afrique française, tandis que paraissait un numéro spécial de la revue Présence africaine, œuvre pionnière sur la question du travail. En un demi-siècle, les bouleversements advenus dans le continent ont modifié la définition même du travail, ses pratiques, ses représentations. Comment se sont effectués ces changements et quels en sont les limites ? Ce livre collectif est le fruit de quatre années de réflexions croisées entre des historiens de quelques universités françaises (Reims, Grenoble) réunis à l'initiative du Centre de recherches africaines de Paris 1 et des spécialistes en sciences sociales de l'Université de Bayreuth. L'enseignement de la civilisation dans la didactique du français langue étrangère confronte l'enseignant à des questions d'ordre pédagogique, mais soulève également des problèmes liés aux représentations contenues dans les discours aussi bien didactiques que culturels. Cet ouvrage s'attache à l'analyse de ces représentations, à travers l'étude de la revue Le Français dans le Monde, sur une période qui couvre une quinzaine d'années à partir de la création de la revue. Il s'intéresse aux différents discours tenus dans la revue au nom de l'enseignement de la civilisation, en les articulant à l'environnement historique et institutionnel. L'ouvrage montre comment ces discours, marqués par une volonté de modernisation et de rupture avec des pratiques pédagogiques traditionnelles, s'inscrivaient dans une politique culturelle plus générale qui visait à refonder la présence française à l'étranger, dans la période qui a suivi les décolonisations. Les acteurs et les discours propres au domaine de l'enseignement de la civilisation ont joué un rôle important dans cette entreprise car ils ont permis de renouveler l'enseignement de la civilisation tout en l'intégrant plus étroitement à la classe de langue.

" Hic sunt leones " - " ici sont les lions " - écrivait-on, sur les atlas anciens de l'Afrique, comme si cet espace-là était, plus qu'un autre, voué à l'investissement de l'imagination. Les Européens ont rêvé l'Afrique, les multiples sociétés africaines ont saturé d'imaginaire leur environnement. Les projections des uns et des autres se sont rencontrées en s'hybridant ou en se télescopant, parfois au prix du malentendu. Plus largement, il existe une vaste gamme d'appréhensions de l'espace. Elles ouvrent à des dimensions qui échappent aux modes de perception classiquement " cartésiens " : l'espace vécu n'est pas l'espace topographique. Qu'on ait affaire à des plans, à des croquis, à des toponymes, à des descriptions, à des récits romanesques ou mythiques, à des créations artistiques, nombreuses sont les difficultés que posent les représentations de l'espace en Afrique. Ces représentations se trouvent par ailleurs prises dans un mouvement constant de déconstruction et de reconstruction, d'où émergent de nouvelles significations et de nouvelles pratiques. Il serait vain de croire que l'époque contemporaine est celle des synthèses stables. Des représentations inédites ne cessent en fait de s'élaborer, en particulier à propos de l'espace urbain, tant les villes concentrent les contradictions actuelles du continent. C'est à partir de ces constats que des chercheurs de disciplines diverses ont tenté de confronter leurs points de vue. En recourant aux lumières de l'analyse littéraire et cinématographique, de l'histoire, de l'anthropologie, de la sociologie, de la géographie et de l'économie, cet ouvrage collectif souligne à quel point les représentations de l'espace africain relèvent de processus complexes et originaux. S'interroger sur l'espace en Afrique, c'est donc voyager au plus profond de l'imaginaire des peuples, débusquer les fausses certitudes, dénaturaliser les repères. The fact: in contrast to other social animals, human beings do not just live in society; they produce society in order to live. The hypothesis: because they have the unique capacity to appropriate and transform nature, they produce culture and create history.
