De l'Auvergne est la synthèse de plus de trente-cinq ans de travaux géohistoriques dans notre région. L'Auvergne présentée ici est celle de la longue durée, des interactions innombrables entre les facteurs les plus divers, de leur hiérarchisation variable avec le cours du temps, des permanences aux apparences subtilement changeantes, accompagnées de temps à autre de quelques ruptures vraies mais partielles. C'est une Auvergne sans frontière mais bien individualisée avec son foyer fondamental dans l'axe de l'Allier, les aires d'influence directe et indirecte de ce dernier, des périphéries où se perturbent quelques archaïsmes (mot non péjoratif !) et où s'entrecroisent des courants extérieurs plus ou moins actifs et persistants, des marges où l'on commence à basculer vers d'autres horizons. C'est un pays dont tous les observateurs ont souligné la « constance », où l'on découvre non pas le repli sur soi mais une aptitude surprenante à trier et à adapter ce qu'il emprunte. Sur ces bases d'un choix éclairé par l'adéquation à sa propre nature, l'Auvergne a joué la rôle de relais entre les foyers les plus dynamiques de l'espace français (Bassin Parisien, France orientale structurée par le sillon rhodanien) et les terres occidentales et méridionales plus immobiles. Tout cela qui, pour l'essentiel, dura plus de vingt siècles, est maintenant fragilisé par des évolutions économiques et démographiques d'une puissance irrésistible. Est-ce périmé pour autant ? Sans succomber à la tentation de composer des onguents pour jambe de bois afin d'entretenir le moral de la troupe, l'auteur met en avant quelques idées visant à redynamiser l'Auvergne sur ses propres bases, au sein de son cadre véritable, la France centraliste, à mieux l'articuler sur ses voisins naturels de la France médiane qui l'englobe, pour en faire un maillon solide et actif de la France toute entière, en laquelle il ose croire malgré les nivellements organisés de la globalisation et d'une européanisation sans nul doute nécessaire, mais mal conçue si elle doit remettre en cause l'héritage positif d'une nation telle que la nôtre.
