The essay traces the salient historical steps of the Jesuat congregation, highlighting its genesis and development up to the year of its suppression (1668). The focus is on the dynamics triggered by the born of the Jesuat congregation, who grew on the border between the "church of the religious" and the "church of the laity", and on the use of intellectual energies of the Jesuat friars, because they were directed towards defining and safeguarding their own religious identity. The latter had two focal points: the example of Giovanni Colombini, its first "father", and, at the same time, the defence of the autonomy necessary to move interstitially between institutions, groups and movements. The historical parable of the Jesuats, in fact, clearly shows the importance assumed by the network of social relations for the constitution of the movement and for its progressive normalisation.

Il volume sintetizza la storia della congregazione gesuata evidenziandone gli elementi di connessione e di confronto col tessuto sociale coevo, descrivendo poi l’origine e le più antiche vicende del ramo femminile della congregazione, e la memoria del fatidico incontro tra il ‘fondatore’ dei gesuati e la ‘fondatrice’ delle gesuate. È indagata la memoria iconografica dell’iniziatore dei gesuati, la raccolta delle laudi del gesuato Bianco da Siena, e la fortuna della Vita quattrocentesca di Giovanni Colombini, redatta da Feo Belcari. Nel testo poi si ricostruisce la costellazione di gruppi, di esperimenti religiosi e di portatori di idee e di devozioni che fu legata ai gesuati e, in particolare, ai conventi di Milano, Siena, Lucca, Venezia e Roma e ai santuari gestiti dalla congregazione. È analizzata la sociabilità congregazionale nelle sue linee: l’esercizio del lavoro come farmacisti e la coltivazione di amicizie spirituali con persone di spicco come la contessa di Guastalla, Lodovica Torelli. È infine studiato l’uso erudito dell’Epistolario del Colombini come testo di lingua. Il volume è chiuso dall’Appendice documentaria sul convento gesuato di Chiusi.

Saint Birgitta of Sweden (d. 1373), one of the most famous visionary women of the late Middle Ages, lived in Rome for the last 23 years of her life. Much of her extensive literary work was penned there. Her Celestial Revelations circulated widely from the late 14th century to the 17th century, copied in Italian scriptoria, translated into vernacular, and printed in several Latin and Italian editions. The book analyses the history of the Jesuat congregation, highlighting the elements of connection and comparison with the social contexts, then describing the origin and the most ancient events of the female branch of the congregation, and the memory of the meeting between the "founder" of the Jesuats and the "foundress" of the Gesuate. The iconographic memory of the initiator of the congregation, Giovani Colombini, the collection of the lauds of the Jesuat Bianco da Siena, and the fortune of the 15th-century Life of Giovanni Colombini, written by Feo Belcari, are also investigated. Then the research reconstructs the constellation of groups, religious experiments and bearers of ideas and devotions that were linked to the Jesuats and, in particular, to the convents of Milan, Siena, Lucca, Venice and Rome and the sanctuaries managed by the congregation. The congregational sociability is analysed along its lines: the practice of work as pharmacists and the cultivation of spiritual friendships with prominent people such as the Countess of Guastalla, Lodovica Torelli. Finally, the erudite use of Colombini's Epistolario as a language text is studied. The volume closes with a documentary appendix on the Jesuat convent of Chiusi.

Ce livre a pour principal objet un manuscrit conservé à Rome mais composé à Florence au milieu du XVe siècle qui transmet un texte presque inconnu et très original pour au moins trois motifs. L’argument traité : une description de l’ermitage de Camaldoli à une époque de forte valorisation de ce lieu. Le genre discursif : la description d’un paysage bâti, influencée aussi bien par l’ekphrasis humaniste que par la tradition de l’exégèse figurative médiévale. Enfin le dédicataire de l’œuvre, qui n’est autre que Pierre le Goutteux fils de Cosimo dei Medici. Le livre examine successivement la tradition médiévale et moderne de cette petite œuvre, l’identité de son auteur et son milieu de production et de première réception et enfin les détails – pour certains absolument inédits – de la description de l’ermitage camaldule et leur tradition textuelle et figurative. Il se conclut par l’édition critique de l’œuvre et des gloses dont elle a été enrichie à l’époque moderne. Il s’agit donc d’une contribution non seulement à l’histoire d’un important centre monastique toscan, mais aussi à celle des réseaux culturels et politiques de la Toscane de la seconde moitié du XVe siècle, ainsi qu’à la connaissance des genres textuels et iconographiques de la description du paysage et des monuments, et enfin, d’une certaine façon, de l’érudition toscane moderne.

Fra il secolo XI e il Novecento il monastero di San Miniato al Monte di Firenze ha svolto un ruolo di primo piano nella vita religiosa e culturale della città. Nel volume si analizza per la prima volta, approfondendo temi, episodi e personaggi particolarmente significativi, l’evoluzione storica e documentaria di questo istituto, celebre quasi solo dal punto di vista della sua facies architettonica e del suo patrimonio storico-artistico. Il testo prende le mosse dal periodo del patronato vescovile, quando il cenobio e alcuni suoi esponenti emersero nel contesto della riforma ecclesiastica successiva al Mille, e prosegue con lo studio del primo periodo in cui il complesso ospitò i monaci olivetani (XIV-XVI secc.), per giungere alle importanti trasformazioni strutturali e funzionali, ma anche e soprattutto semantiche, che il monumento e l’intera area su cui esso sorge conobbero in piena età moderna e contemporanea.
