Attraverso le pagine di quest’opera monumentale, articolata in sette romanzi (Dalla parte di Swann, All’ombra delle fanciulle in fiore, I Guermantes, Sodoma e Gomorra, La Prigioniera, Albertine scomparsa e Il Tempo ritrovato), ci viene rivelata un’intera società, nell’arco di tempo che va dal 1880 al 1920. Protagonista assoluta è l’aristocrazia, colta nel momento in cui si conclude la sua splendida parabola. Tutti i personaggi sono sostanzialmente dei vinti, a ognuno il tempo ha sottratto qualcosa. Soltanto la memoria sembra sopravvivere alla sua tirannia e solo nell’arte è possibile trovare un compenso al disordine del mondo. Marcel Proust nacque a Parigi nel 1871 da famiglia borghese. Esordì come scrittore su alcune riviste legate al simbolismo. Nel 1893 il poeta Robert de Montesquiou lo introdusse nell’ambiente aristocratico che gli fornì molti modelli per i suoi personaggi. Si interessò di architettura, pittura, scultura. Nel 1902 morì il padre; quando, nel 1905 perse la madre, cui era legato da tenerezza morbosa, l’asma da fieno di cui soffriva fin da bambino divenne cronica. Nel 1906 si trasferì in un appartamento di boulevard Haussmann, dove fece applicare alle pareti della stanza un rivestimento di sughero per proteggersi dal rumore: qui, isolato dal mondo, scrisse Alla ricerca del tempo perduto, il monumentale ciclo di sette romanzi cui lavorò fino agli ultimi giorni della sua vita.

Se il secondo volume della Ricerca, All'ombra delle fanciulle in fiore, nacque dalla fusione tra alcuni capitoli tolti dal primo per esigenze di spazio, e alcuni sviluppi narrativi accordati all'accresciuta importanza del personaggio di Albertine, il terzo volume della serie, I Guermantes, appartiene invece al nucleo primitivo dell'opera: tracce degli episodi mondani che vi compaiono si possono trovare già in Jean Santeuil (dove quelli che diventeranno i Guermantes si chiamano ancora Réveillon) e nel Contro Sainte-Beuve. Al momento dell'uscita di Dalla parte di Swann, nel 1913, l'intera Ricerca del tempo perduto avrebbe dovuto comprendere tre volumi, intitolati appunto Dalla parte di Swann, Dalla parte di Guermantes e II tempo ritrovato. Fin dalla lettura dei titoli appare evidente la simmetria in base alla quale l'opera si sarebbe dovuta strutturare. All'origine di tutto, sono le due diverse passeggiate che si possono intraprendere da Combray, e che introducono, agli occhi di Marcel bambino, in due mondi misteriosi e sconosciuti, infinitamente fantasticati; la parte di Méséglise (detta anche di Swann, perché qui si trova la villa di costui, Tansonville) e la parte di Guermantes (dove si trovava il castello della nobile famiglia, un tempo feudataria di Combray). Le due passeggiate simboleggiano i due diversi mondi in cui Marcel penetrerà una volta uscito dall'infanzia: l'alta società borghese, che è anche quella cui appartengono i suoi genitori, e il mondo dell'aristocrazia. L'opposizione tra queste due «parti» era destinata a cadere nel terzo volume, che avrebbe così assolto la funzione di una sintesi, simboleggiata dal personaggio della signorina di Saint-Loup, nata dal matrimonio tra Robert di Saint-Loup, nipote dei duchi di Guermantes, e Gilberte, la figlia di Swann e Odette. La purezza di tale schema, che aveva semmai il difetto di fondarsi troppo esclusivamente su un'opposizione di natura sociologica (la rivalità fra l'alta borghesia e l'aristocrazia di sangue, con la finale fusione delle due classi), fu turbata, ma non completamente soppressa, dalle enormi aggiunte che Proust durante la guerra portò alla propria opera, e che si raccolgono principalmente attorno al tema metafisico dell'amore infelice (di Marcel per Albertine, ma anche di Charlus per Morel). Il piano della Ricerca, annunciato nel 1913 sul risvolto di copertina di Dalla parte di Swann, ci permette anche di valutare con precisione l'entità delle aggiunte fatte da Proust a I Guermantes. Questo infatti avrebbe dovuto in un primo momento comprendere le seguenti sezioni: A casa della signora Swann, Nomi di paesi: il paese, Primi schizzi del barone di Charlus e di Robert di Saint-Loup (tutta questa parte confluì in All'ombra delle fanciulle in fiore), Nomi di persone: la duchessa di Guermantes, Il salotto della signora di Villeparisis.
