Comment expliquer le déchaînement de cette violence ? Où en trouver les racines ? Dans la chute des empires ? Dans l'emprise croissante des Etats sur la société ? Dans la montée du phénomène de guerre totale impliquant toute la société dans le conflit : hommes, femmes, militaires et civils, au front et à l'arrière, dans les tranchées comme dans les usines. Si ces manifestations de violences paroxystiques sont incontestables, doit-on pour autant réduire le premier XXe siècle à la " brutalisation ", des sociétés contemporaines ? Réunis dans cet ouvrage, quarante-trois historiens, Allemands, Américains, Belge, Britannique, Espagnols, Français, Irlandais, Italiens, Russes, Suisse, dépassent les limites étroites des points de vue nationaux et s'efforcent d'éclairer ces questions en restituant à un large public la complexité du mouvement des sociétés en guerre et en paix. Le profil du XXe siècle qu'ils esquissent est sans conteste celui de l'industrialisation de la guerre, combinant de façon inédite la gestion bureaucratique de la violence meurtrière et le déchaînement des pulsions les plus primaires. Mais le siècle dernier a aussi été celui de mutations sociales de grande ampleur, un siècle de construction de la paix dans des sociétés qui revendiquaient plus d'égalité et de démocratie. Commencée avec la colonisation, prolongée par les deux guerres mondiales, le génocide des Arméniens, des juifs et des tziganes, la violence de masse du XXe siècle est terrifiante. Maïs on oublie trop souvent que ce siècle fut aussi marqué par la défaite radicale des idéologies qui avaient érigé cette violence en système et par l'affirmation durable d'une culture de paix.
