The Caribbean countries, and many other Third World countries in Latin America, Asia and Africa, have been under the yoke of structural adjustment measures for more than a decade. Numerous studies have addressed the inequality of North-South relations, the lack of transparency in negotiations that have led to the signature of agreements, the absence of a clear definition of responsibilities of the parties engaged, the inadequacy and inadaptation of policies with regard to the socio-cultural context, and especially the refusal to take into account the social demands of the most deprived. The criticisms formulated in this book can only find a beginning of solutions by the setting up of a solid administrative organization in which the public officials are made accountable and who, once aware of the national and international stakes, can confront the constraints involved in State/international negotiation relations. The book is a very rich presentation of the concept and the problems of structural adjustment and institutional development in the developing countries. Beside the impressive introduction and the convincing conclusion, the articles on these prerequisites for institutional sustainability present the most important empirical research results. The contents is a clear description of problems, failures and results in institutional reforms.

This book posits that women’s political leadership is vital for transitions to a sustainable future. It investigates the unsustainability of the current social order, offers strategies for achieving sustainable development, and explores the structure and agency variables that enable women political leaders to successfully drive political innovations for a greater societal transformation. This book sheds light on the genesis of the current capitalist social order, the transformational role of the state, political leadership, political innovations, and particularly women leaders in driving sustainable development. The book analyses three case studies of women leaders who have successfully implemented political innovations for sustainable statehood and development on national, regional, and local governance levels: Jacinda Ardern, Carole Delga, and Valérie Plante. From these case studies, the author demonstrates which agency and structural prerequisites are crucial for women political leaders to become a driving force behind creating the conditions needed for a sustainable future. Taking both a theoretical and an empirical approach, this is key reading for graduate students and researchers interested in political leadership, gender and politics, political innovations, sustainability sciences, and transition research. It will also be of interest to political leaders, and those advising them, looking to understand the leadership styles, skills, and strategies needed to successfully drive progressive political agendas for sustainable statehood and development.

Climate justice is a crucial issue, particularly for Indigenous communities that are disproportionately affected by environmental changes despite contributing the least to global emissions. Achieving sustainability and social justice requires an inclusive approach that considers diverse policies, cultural perspectives, and methodological interventions. As globalization deepens interconnectivity, addressing climate justice through equitable policies, climate finance, and community-driven solutions becomes essential for ensuring a just and sustainable future. Examining both policy gaps and actionable solutions can help create frameworks that protect vulnerable populations while advancing global sustainability goals. Community Climate Justice and Sustainable Development explores the intersection of climate justice, Indigenous rights, and sustainable development, highlighting the policies and actions needed to achieve social and environmental equity. By analyzing case studies, policy frameworks, and financial mechanisms, it provides a comprehensive discussion on bridging the gap between climate commitments and real-world impact. Covering topics such as climate migrants, tribal rights, and indigenous knowledge, this book is an excellent resource for social justice advocates, environmentalists, policymakers, professionals, researcher, scholars, academicians, and more.
