Community participation is acknowledged to be crucial to the success of regeneration partnerships, yet, there has been little research to date on the 'community leaders' directly involved in partnerships. Leadership styles, inter-sectoral relationships and the interaction between individuals involved in regeneration work are vital in shaping successful partnerships.Community leadership in area regeneration addresses the issues surrounding community leadership, describing, analysing and making recommendations about the ways in which significant people from local communities become involved in partnerships, how they exercise their 'leadership role' and how that role can be enhanced.The report highlights the importance of recognising diversity within communities and explores community leaders' own experiences of area regeneration programmes, looking at participation, capacity building, monitoring and evaluation. Despite the radical transformation of society associated with globalisation, shifting patterns of demography and the revolution in information and communication technologies over the last two decades, we remain profoundly attached to place in economic, social, cultural and emotional terms.
