This is the first book in the field of workplace discourse to examine the relationships among leadership, ethnicity, and language use. Taking a social constructionist approach to the ways in which leadership is enacted through discourse, Leadership, Discourse, and Ethnicity problematizes the concept of ethnicity and demonstrates the importance of context-particularly the community of practice-in determining what counts as relevant in the analysis of ethnicity. The authors analyse everyday workplace interactions supplemented by interview data to examine the ways in which workplace leaders use language to achieve their transactional and relational goals in contrasting "ethnicized" contexts, two of which are Maori and two European/Pakeha. Their analysis pays special attention to the roles of ethnic values, beliefs and orientations in talk.

Gender, Identity and Educational Leadership explores how head teachers' social identities – particularly pertaining to gender, social class and ethnicity – influence their leadership of diverse populations of pupils and staff. Informed by new research conducted throughout the first decade of the 21st century and advances in gender theories, the book draws attention to how head teachers' views of their diverse school populations influence school leadership. Connections are made between head teachers' social identities; their personal and professional histories; and their perceptions of diversity amongst the children, young people, staff and the wider communities they serve.

"This rich explorative book examines the intricacies of gender, sexuality, ethnicity and class and how these complex influences weave their patterns in the daily lives of leaders. It achieves the difficult balance between acknowledging differences as well as unifying elements. The book also raises many questions about the context for leadership and examines the central issues of: leadership for what? What are leaders there to do - and for whom? To ensure that students achieve higher examination scores, or to promote equity and social justice? This book offers many fresh insights into these and other important questions." Professor Kathryn Riley, Institute of Education, University of London This book features chapters by leading international scholars on gender and educational leadership. Drawing on research in schools in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, the United States and Canada, it introduces new discussions about the impact of gender, race, class, institutional setting and recent ideologies on leadership discourses. The book shows how early research has over-emphasized gender stereotypes and tended to simplify and polarize the ways men and women lead.Looking at differences and similarities in how men and women take on and exercise leadership roles, the authors counter essentialist claims based on biological, psychological and sociological theories that stress gender difference. The discussions employ sophisticated understandings of gender relations and leadership discourses in today’s globalized context. The book is for students and scholars studying leadership and for leaders in different educational contexts around the world.

This multidisciplinary volume brings together wide-ranging empirical research that goes behind the scenes of diverse organizations dealing with business, politics, law, media, education, and sports to unravel stereotypes of discursive leadership practices as they unfold in situ. It includes contributions that explore how leadership discourse is impacted by increasing pressures of “glocalization” (the need to communicate across cultures and languages), “mediatization” (leaving ubiquitous digital traces), standardization (with quality management programmes negotiating organizational procedures), mobility (endless fast-paced long distance synchronization) and acceleration (permanent co-adaption and change). The discussion of purposefully chosen case studies moves beyond questions of who is a leader and what leaders do, to how leadership stereotypes are being challenged in various communities of practice, and thereby making change possible. Cross-cultural and interdisciplinary approaches are used to get deeper insights into the competing, multi-voiced, controversial and complex identities and relationships enacted in leadership discourse practices.

In recent years, the issue of race in education in the UK have been submerged in wider discourses of diversity, leading to an invisibility of the quotidian experiences of marginalised peoples in educational institutions. Race, Education and Educational Leadership in England looks at how the experiences of black and ethnic minority (BME) students and academics in education has changed and investigates how the implementation of current policies on race equality are being monitored by the government. The contributors take an integrated approach, looking at issues and themes that occur across all educational phases in England and draw on expertise from within and outside the education system. The editors highlight areas of weakness and good practice in access, curriculum, progression and the lived experience. This book makes a compelling argument for why race equality matters in England's education system.

This book explores the politics of ethnicity and nationalism in the Caribbean from a critical discourse-analytical perspective. Focusing on political communication in Trinidad and Tobago, it offers unique socio-political insights into one of the most complex and diverse countries of the Archipelago. Through a detailed reconstruction of Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s 2010 victorious run for office, this book offers ample empirical evidence of the multimodal discursive strategies that held the key to the success of the first woman PM candidate and her inter-ethnic coalition bid to overcome political tribalism in the country. In parallel, it explores the implications and challenges of the postcolonial Trinbagonian national project, caught between pluralism and creolization. Through its innovative, context-dependent and interdisciplinary CDS approach, this book breaks new ground in Caribbean Studies while at the same time broadening the horizons of the Euro-American tradition of Political Discourse Studies to address the complexities of global postcoloniality.
