In this second volume of the Applied Research Center for Intellectual Assets and the Law in Asia (ARCIALA) series, thirty-seven eminent scholars and practitioners from Asia and the United States have come together to comprehensively assess leading copyright cases from eight major Asian jurisdictions (People’s Republic of China (PRC), India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Taiwan). This book contains thirty-six case reports that focus on six topics that reflect the current trends in Asian copyright law—namely, digital copyright, collective copyright (including the management of copyright and the interface between collecting societies and competition law), criminal copyright (with a discussion of criminal punishment for copyright infringement), limits to copyright (such as fair use and exhaustion), the relationship between copyright laws and other forms of protection, and choice of jurisdiction and applicable law in copyright litigation. Each case report deconstructs the legal background, facts, and rationale of the decision in a particular landmark case, and then discusses the commercial or industrial significance and application. Notably, this includes an analysis of The Hague Convention on Choice of Court Agreements and its adoption in Singapore, which is, to date, the only Asian country to have fully ratified it. Taken together, this volume presents a useful guide for copyright practitioners, professionals, lawyers, and judges alike in addition to acting as a primer for students and businessmen planning to enter Asia’s exciting world of copyright. Classic American Popular Song: The Second Half-Century, 1950-2000 addresses the question: What happened to American popular song after 1950? There are numerous books available on the so-called Golden Age of popular song, but none that follow the development of popular song styles in the second half of the 20th century. While 1950 is seen as the end of an era, the tap of popular song creation hardly ran dry after that date. Many of the classic songwriters continued to work through the following decades: Porter was active until 1958; Rodgers until the later 1970s; Arlen until 1976. The Guiding Helper is a practical guide to the Din that the Prophet Muhammad (May Allah bless him and give him peace) brought.The Guiding Helper is based on a famous metered verse song written by a scholar named Ahmad ibn 'Ali ibn 'Abd al-Wahid ibn 'Ashir born in Spain and raised in Fez, Morocco about seven hundred years ago. This scholar divided his song into three books: (1) one about Islamic beliefs, (2) one about Islamic law, and (3) one about Islamic spirituality. He based the first book on a famous text of beliefs called The Mother of Proofs for the Tenets of Belief written by Muhammad ibn Yusuf al-Sunusi al-Husayni. He based his second book on a renown text of Maliki law called The Concise Text written by Khalil Ibn Ishaq ibn Ya'qub. He based his third book on a popular text on spirituality called The Letter of Qushayri written by 'Abd al-Karim al-Qushayri.The Maliki Fiqh is used to describe the practices of Islam.
