Dedicated to the hundreds of practitioners who work at international branch campuses (IBCs), this volume examines the unique challenges ICB professionals face in the leading edge of development in the global higher education sector and how they are unlike those confronted by their colleagues on the home campus. The volume is designed to provide readers with an overview of the IBC phenomenon, as well as provide practical insights from those directly involved in the development of multinational colleges and universities. Editors Jason E. Lane and Kevin Kinser of the Institute for Global Education Policy Studies at State University of New York, and begin with an overview of the development of IBCs. The first chapter, by Jason Lane, traces the history of such institutions and discusses various intentions behind their creation and the roles they play in the host country. The next two chapters deal specifically with issues pertaining to faculty and students. The second chapter focuses on strategies for managing and leading academic staff spread across multiple countries. The third chapter looks at the challenges of replicating the student collegiate experience that exists on the home campus. Subsequent contributing chapters discuss the increasing interest among developing nations to create a community college system similar to that in the United States as well as the global regulatory, legal, and policy environments. At the end of the volume, readers will find an extensive annotated bibliography of nearly a hundred scholarly and policy writings that deal directly with international branch campuses. This bibliography is divided into several sections to help readers navigate the extensive listing. The sections include: General, Arab Gulf, Asia, Development Perspective, Management, Quality, Students, Teaching and Learning, and Trade and Regulation. Each reading is listed only once, though many could be classified under multiple sections. This is the 155th volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Higher Education. It arose out of the long-standing interest of the volume?s editors in understanding the emergence of multinational educational institutions. These interests fostered the development of the Cross-Border Education Research Team (C-BERT), which provided the scholarly foundation for this volume.

PRAISE FOR REFRAMING ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP | 1st ED “Reframing Academic Leadership is the most comprehensive book on the topic and an excellent source of knowledge for faculty and managerial leaders in every college and university. An invaluable resource for students of higher education leadership!” —MAUREEN SULLIVAN, Past President, American Library Association and Association of College and Research Libraries “Reframing Academic Leadership provides a compassionate understanding of the stresses of leadership in higher education. It offers insights to those who do not fully appreciate why higher education is so hard to ‘manage’ and validation for those entirely familiar with this world. I recommend it enthusiastically.” —JUDITH BLOCK MCLAUGHLIN, Senior lecturer on education and faculty chair of the Harvard Seminar for New Presidents and the Harvard Seminar for Presidential Leadership, Harvard Graduate School of Education “Bolman and Gallos provide a refreshing view of leadership essential for those assuming presidencies and other important leadership positions in higher education. This work is a bedside reference for aspiring and current leadership in higher education not only in the U.S. but also abroad.” —FERNANCO LEON GARCIA, President, Sistema CETYS Universidad, Baja California, Mexico “Bolman and Gallos have written a practical, lucid text that brings together illustrative vignettes and robust frameworks for diagnosing and managing colleges and universities. I recommend it to new and experienced administrators who will routinely confront difficult people, structures, and cultures in their workplaces.” —CHRISTOPHER MORPHEW, Dean, School of Education, Johns Hopkins University “Reframing Academic Leadership is filled with real-world examples from leaders. The book reads like a guide for leading a chamber music rehearsal where one’s role constantly shifts from star to servant and where multiple answers may be ‘right’.” —PETER WHITE, Dean and Professor of Conducting, Conservatory of Music, University of the Pacific

What S Public About Public Higher Ed written by Stephen M. Gavazzi and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-19 with Education categories.

Exploring the current state of relationships between public universities, government leaders, and the citizens who elect them, this book offers insight into how to repair the growing rift between higher education and its public. Higher education gets a bad rap these days. The public perception is that there is a growing rift between public universities and the elected officials who support them. In What's Public about Public Higher Ed?, Stephen M. Gavazzi and E. Gordon Gee explore the reality of that supposed divide, offering qualitative and quantitative evidence of why it's happened and what can be done about it. Critical problems, Gavazzi and Gee argue, have arisen because higher education leaders often assumed that what was good for universities was good for the public at large. For example, many public institutions have placed more emphasis on research at the expense of teaching, learning, and outreach. This university-centric viewpoint has contributed significantly to the disconnect between our nation's public universities and the representatives of the people they are supposed to be serving. But this gulf can only be bridged, the authors insist, if people at the universities take the time to really listen to what the citizens of their states are asking of them. Gavazzi and Gee draw on never-before-gathered survey data on public sentiment regarding higher education. Collected from citizens residing in the four most populous states—California, Florida, New York, and Texas—plus Ohio and West Virginia, the authors' home states, this data reflects critical issues, including how universities spend taxpayer money, the pursuit of national rankings, student financial aid, and the interplay of international activities versus efforts to create "closer to home" impact. An unflinching, no-holds-barred exploration of what citizens really think about their public universities, What's Public about Public Higher Ed? also places special emphasis on the events of 2020—including the COVID-19 pandemic and the worst racial unrest seen in half a century—as major inflection points for understanding the implications of the survey's findings.

For more than 30 years, U.S. News' Best Colleges program has been the "gold standard" guide to U.S. colleges. In this edition, education journalists dig into such emerging trends as business schools incorporating more liberal arts courses, big changes coming to the SAT test, and what colleges are doing to prevent sexual violence. Education experts - including a panel of admissions officers - provide advice on planning your college search, including what to say and what not to say on applications and essays. As "USA Today" noted, the guidebook "gathers up all the pertinent information about a college and some of the best advice possible, all in one organized place." A 160-page directory section profiles nearly 1,600 colleges that adMISSION POSSIBLE said is appreciated by college-admissions professionals for the "up-to-date information it provides re median 25th-75th percentile scores for all the colleges in the US, as well as current information on application deadlines, ethnic make-up of the colleges, most popular majors, and expenses for tuition, room and board." The directory section also lists other vital data for each school -- such as admissions selectivity and typical financial-aid packages. And of course there are U.S. News' exclusive rankings, based on extensive data gathering and objective, expert analysis. The rankings highlight various kinds of schools - large national universities and small liberal arts colleges, those with the best undergraduate business and engineering programs, state-supported colleges, "best value" schools, and historically black colleges and universities. Also noted are colleges that excel in such areas as providing internships and undergraduate research - and those where graduates carry the least debt.
