The UK has a serious skills problem and at the same time the need for skills is increasing. The government has placed skills at the heart of its agenda. The national skills agenda and the establishment of the Learning and Skills Council, the Sector Skills Development Agency and the network of Sector Skills Councils, are key means by which government is seeking to increase skill levels. This is the first book to draw together the evidence on the 'case' for skills and to examine the policies appropriate to achieving 'skills for all'. Learn to succeed: argues that raising skill levels is crucial to both economic success and social inclusion; demonstrates the benefits of higher skill levels to people, to companies and to communities; synthesises a wide range of materials in one convenient volume, providing a reference source on the issues; deals with the issues at both national and local levels; sets out a clear agenda for action. Learn to succeed is essential reading for policy makers and practitioners in national, regional and local government departments and agencies, and is also recommended for students and academics on courses at undergraduate and graduate level in applied economics, education or public policy.

Discover ways to empower students to build confidence in sharing their learning, becoming more responsible digital citizens and evolving into classroom creators. In researching the top skills students need to succeed in the future, author Rachelle Dene Poth identified the following: ability to communicate, work in teams, think creatively, problem-solve and design. This book shows educators how to help students develop these essential skills through authentic, real-world learning experiences, building a pathway for the future of learning and work. In Chart a New Course, educators will get the tools they need to design more purposeful learning experiences to drive student engagement and motivation, promote creativity in learning, model risk-taking and build classroom culture. Readers will discover how these activities can be woven into instruction rather than layered on existing curriculum, with ideas for getting started; suggestions in response to the statement, “If you’re doing this, try this instead;” and lessons learned along the way. The book will: • Foster authentic learning through integration of digital tools and emerging trends. • Serve as a resource for emerging educators and those with varying levels of tech experience, helping them explore the use of different digital tools and concepts to prepare students for the future. • Offer clear examples and narratives from students and other educators who have implemented some of the tools discussed, focusing on themes of empowered learning, innovative design and student choice. • Explore risks taken, failures experienced and fun in working through the challenges, illustrating ways to weave established and emerging topics into curriculum. This accessible resource opens up a variety of learning experiences for students and illustrates how to implement different technologies into multiple content areas and grade levels.

Target AudienceThis text is designed for the first course in Statics offered in the sophomore year. OverviewThe main objective of a first course in mechanics should be to develop in the engineering student the ability to analyze any problem in a simple and logical manner and to apply to its solution a few, well-understood, basic principles. This text is designed to help the instructor achieve this goal. Vector analysis is introduced early in the text and is used in the presentation and discussion of the fundamental principles of mechanics. Vector methods are also used to solve many problems, particularly three-dimensional problems where these techniques result in a simpler and more concise solution. The emphasis in this text, however, remains on the correct understanding of the principles of mechanics and on their application to the solution of engineering problems, and vector analysis is presented chiefly as a convenient tool. In order to achieve the goal of being able to analyze mechanics problems, the text employs the following pedagogical strategy: Practical applications are introduced early. New concepts are introduced simply. Fundamental principles are placed in simple contexts. Students are given extensive practice through: sample problems, special sections entitled Solving Problems on Your Own, extensive homework problem sets, review problems at the end of each chapter, and computer problems designed to be solved with computational software. Resources Supporting This Textbook Instructor’s and Solutions Manual features typeset, one-per-page solutions to the end of chapter problems. It also features a number of tables designed to assist instructors in creating a schedule of assignments for their course. The various topics covered in the text have been listed in Table I and a suggested number of periods to be spent on each topic has been indicated. Table II prepares a brief description of all groups of problems. Sample lesson schedules are shown in Tables III, IV, and V, together with various alternative lists of assigned homework problems. Wow, where did that thought come from? If you've ever had that thought, this book is for you. Everything starts with a thought, great ideas, and inventions, for example, but also horrible ideas, and sin starts with a thought as well. So, what is a person to do? Are we doomed to simply be the bearers of whatever thoughts race through our minds at any given time? By no means; as children of God we have everything we need to live well, starting with the thoughts in our minds. We are not captives to our thoughts, but in fact we can take our thoughts captive. This book looks at four different aspects that lead to developing a theology of a sound mind and a good thought life. To build a sound mind, one must be actively involved in the process. The information gained on what a sound mind is, how to improve and activate it, and healthy habits to incorporate to strengthen the mind should be continually applied--both for our benefit and, most importantly, so each person can honor and glorify God to the best of their ability.
