This publication advances the state-of-the-art in ontology learning by presenting a set of novel approaches to the semi-automatic acquisition, refinement and evaluation of logically complex axiomatizations. It has been motivated by the fact that the realization of the semantic web envisioned by Tim Berners-Lee is still hampered by the lack of ontological resources, while at the same time more and more applications of semantic technologies emerge from fast-growing areas such as e-business or life sciences. Such knowledge-intensive applications, requiring large scale reasoning over complex domains of interest, even more than the semantic web depend on the availability of expressive, high-quality axiomatizations. This knowledge acquisition bottleneck could be overcome by approaches to the automatic or semi-automatic construction of ontologies. Hence a huge number of ontology learning tools and frameworks have been developed in recent years, all of them aiming for the automatic or semi-automatic generation of ontologies from various kinds of data. However, both the quality and the expressivity of ontologies that can be acquired by the current state-of-the-art in ontology learning so far have failed to meet the expectations of people who argue in favor of powerful, knowledge-intensive applications based on logical inference. This work therefore takes a first, yet important, step towards the semi-automatic generation and maintenance of expressive ontologies.

May the Forcing Functions be with You: The Stimulating World of AIED and ITS Research It is my pleasure to write the foreword for Advances in Intelligent Tutoring S- tems. This collection, with contributions from leading researchers in the field of artificial intelligence in education (AIED), constitutes an overview of the many challenging research problems that must be solved in order to build a truly intel- gent tutoring system (ITS). The book not only describes some of the approaches and techniques that have been explored to meet these challenges, but also some of the systems that have actually been built and deployed in this effort. As discussed in the Introduction (Chapter 1), the terms “AIED” and “ITS” are often used int- changeably, and there is a large overlap in the researchers devoted to exploring this common field. In this foreword, I will use the term “AIED” to refer to the - search area, and the term “ITS” to refer to the particular kind of system that AIED researchers build. It has often been said that AIED is “AI-complete” in that to produce a tutoring system as sophisticated and effective as a human tutor requires solving the entire gamut of artificial intelligence research (AI) problems.

Spatial information describes types, relations, and various different aspects of space. This PhD thesis investigates how modular ontologies can model spatial information. Particularly, different perspectives on space are analyzed. A perspectival framework for spatial ontology modules is presented that allows the integration and combination of different facets of spatial information. This work discusses perspectives on space by distinguishing and categorizing quantitative, qualitative, abstract, domain-specific, and modal types of spatial information. Application examples are presented for spatial natural language interpretation, image recognition, and architectural design. The results are achieved by theoretical analyses of spatial domains as well as empirical and experimental findings from different disciplines related to the spatial domain. Technically, methods from formal ontology and ontological engineering are applied.
