Least of the Apostles is a study of Paul's relation, both in his ministry and through his epistles, to the rest of apostolic Christianity. Studies relating Paul to Judaism, the Roman empire, or Greco-Roman philosophy abound; we adopt the comparatively neglected approach of relating Paul specifically to his fellow apostles. The first three chapters explore the influence on Paul of sources from the earliest church (James and his circle, the "apostolic decree," and proto-Synoptic traditions), while the final three explore Paul's influence on Hebrews, Luke and John, and the Petrine Epistles. We conclude by considering the implications of these findings for New Testament theology.

Learn more about Paul's ministry and message in one week than many Christians have learned in a lifetime. The Least of the Apostles, which is how Paul described himself, is designed to be a simple, easy to read, overview of Paul's ministry and message. The book places a carefully condensed version of Paul's letters chronologically into the historical story of Paul's ministry as recorded in the Book of Acts. Brief introductions to each letter and footnotes on historical background help the reader better understand Paul's ministry in the broader context of ancient Roman history.

"Besides Jesus, no one has kept me from despair, or taken me deeper into the mysteries of the gospel, than the apostle Paul." —John Piper No one has had a greater impact on the world for eternal good than the apostle Paul—except Jesus himself. For John Piper, this impact is very personal. He does not just admire and trust Paul. He loves him. Piper gives us thirty glimpses into why his heart and mind respond this way. Can a Christian-killer really endure 195 lashes from a heart of love? Can a mystic who thinks he was caught up into heaven be a model of lucid rationality? Can an ethnocentric Jew write the most beautiful call to reconciliation? Can a person who lives with the unceasing anguish of empathy be always rejoicing? Can a man's description of the horrors of human sin be exceeded by his delight in human splendor? Can a man with a backbone of steel be as tender as a nursing mother? If we know this man—if we see what Piper sees—we too will love him. Paul's testimony is a matter of life and death. Piper invites you into his relationship with Paul in the hope that you will know life, forever.

The Signs Of An Apostle written by C. K. Barrett and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-10-15 with Religion categories.

What did it mean to be an apostle in New Testament times? What does it mean today? C. K. Barrett explores these questions in a lively and penetrating manner. First he surveys the New Testament to discover who the apostles were and what they did. The relation between the original twelve apostles and later Christian leaders, including Paul, is also examined. From the biblical background, the author moves to the church today--how does a church reflect its apostleship in its faith and preaching, life and order? The marks of an apostolic church are seen by Barrett within the context of radical theology and modern plans for church union. As Methodist clergy involved in ecumenical issues and a noted New Testament scholar, Barrett brings a refreshing perspective to his subject. Pastors and laity alike will enjoy the clarity of style and vital approach to the church, past and present.

Gospel Fictions written by Randel Helms and has been published by Prometheus Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-12-02 with Religion categories.

Are the four canonical Gospels actual historical accounts or are they imaginative literature produced by influential literary artists to serve a theological vision? In this study of the Gospels based upon a demonstrable literary theory, Randel Helms presents the work of the four evangelists as the "supreme fictions" of our culture, self-conscious works of art deliberately composed as the culmination of a long literary and oral tradition.Helms analyzes the best-known and the most powerful of these fictions: the stories of Christ's birth, his agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, his betrayal by Judas, his crucifixion, death and resurrection. In Helms' exegesis of the Gospel miracle stories, he traces the greatest of these - the resurrection of Lazarus four days after his death - to the Egyptian myth of the resurrection of Osiris by the god Horus.Helms maintains that the Gospels are self-reflexive; they are not about Jesus so much as they are about the writers' attitudes concerning Jesus. Helms examines each of the narratives - the language, the sources, the similarities and differences - and shows that their purpose was not so much to describe the past as to affect the present. This scholarly yet readable work demonstrates how the Gospels surpassed the expectations of their authors, influencing countless generations by creating a life-enhancing understanding of the nature of Jesus of Nazareth.
