Life Writings/Narratives and studies in gender have been posing critical challenges to fetishizing the manner of canon formations and curriculum propriety. This book engages with these and other challenges turning our customary gaze towards women especially marginal, enabling us to interrogate the established pedagogical practices that accentuates the continuing denial of their agency. Reproduction of the cultural modes of narrativization based on memory and experience becomes a mode of reclaiming the agency. These challenge the homogenising singularity of communitarian notions besides dominant gender constructs using visual, textual, popular, historical, cultural and gender modes enabling one to rethink our received theoretical frameworks. This edited volume brings together 21 essays on life writings produced by both well-established and emerging writers in the field of literature written by scholars from countries like India, Pakistan, China, USA, Iran, Yemen and Australia, to name just a few. Many of the essays in this book focus on how the progress of the self is often impeded by the society it finds itself in. With an enlightening foreword by Dr. E.V. Ramakrishnan and a detailed, critical introduction by Aparna Lanjewar Bose, this anthology is useful for all those who wish to learn more about this genre of writing.

When I first came to consider how to compile and select a personal collection of 80 amazing cakes from all around the world, the task that was set out in front of me seemed almost impossible. There were just so many delicious choices from so many baking traditions! How could I possibly narrow down a selection from all across the baking globe to just 80 cakes, when deep down inside me I knew that I could easily include three times the number. Well, the truth is I simply had to settle on those cakes that I truly loved and felt would convey the wonder of the vast variety of cakes to be found from across all the continents of the globe. Cakes that I could happily cook and eat time and time again. Cakes that gave a sense of wonder and travel and occasionally eccentricity. But always cakes that tasted exquisite and that would be received with hungry appreciation. Some classics such as the French croquembouche seemed like they might be an insurmountable project for most so I combined it with the simplicity of the modern cupcake and the fun of constructing something that doesn’t take all day. I love the whimsical and the unexpected and I haven’t been able to resist giving a few of the cakes my own personal take and twists. They might not be completely true to the tradition with regard to technique or ingredients but they will, trust me, be every bit as delicious as the originals. Some might even think more so! We now appear to live in a world where we are all meant to love to bake. And more and more of us do indeed absolutely love to bake. I have been a pastry chef for more than thirty years now and so I couldn’t be happier with the ever-growing love and fascination with the wonderful world of cakes and baking in general. And it is a world – a very wide world indeed! The cakes of France and Europe differ so very greatly from those sweet delights coming from the ovens of, say, Asia or the Middle East; different flavours and techniques bringing differing results but with one single unifying truth – they are all absolutely delicious to eat. I love the fact that cakes can incorporate flavours and ingredients as wide-ranging and diverse as almonds, walnuts and pistachios contrasting with cakes emitting heavenly scents of cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg; cakes with luscious soft cheese, the finest honey, plumped juicy raisins, glutinous rice flour, sweet potatoes, pandan essence, the freshest of tree-picked fruits and let’s not forget those which are doused in the finest brandies, rums and wines of a locale. This is a world of passionate and creative bakers each creating a cake with their country’s most treasured produce, expertly crafted and sculpted. A global cake heaven. My heaven and I hope soon to be yours too!

“One of the most beautifully written books I've ever read. Kelly McMasters is a literary giant.”—Zibby Owens, Good Morning America A memoir in intimate essays navigating marriage and motherhood, art and ambition, grief and nostalgia, and the elusive concept of home. Kelly McMasters found herself in her midthirties living her fantasy: she’d moved with her husband, a painter, from New York City to rural Pennsylvania, where their children roamed idyllic acres in rainboots and diapers. The pastoral landscape and the bookshop they opened were restorative at first, for her and her marriage. But soon, she was quietly plotting her escape. In The Leaving Season, McMasters chronicles the heady rush of falling in love and carving out a life in the city, the slow dissolution of her relationship in an isolated farmhouse, and the complexities of making a new home for herself and her children as a single parent. She delves into the tricky and often devastating balance between seeing and being seen; loss and longing; desire and doubt; and the paradox of leaving what you love in order to survive. Whether considering masculinity in the countryside through the life of a freemartin calf, the vulnerability of new motherhood in the wake of a car crash, or the power of community pulsing through an independent bookshop, The Leaving Season finds in every ending a new beginning.

Finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor "In this surprisingly upbeat memoir, Annabelle Gurwitch writes about the financial curveballs that can hit you in midlife . . . Somehow, Ms. Gurwitch manages to find humor in these setbacks. Ultimately, this is a story about harnessing resilience and learning how life’s disappointments can teach you about the things that matter most." —Tara Parker-Pope, The New York Times From the New York Times bestselling author of I See You Made an Effort comes a timely and hilarious chronicle of downward mobility, financial and emotional. With signature "sharp wit" (NPR), Annabelle Gurwitch gives irreverent and empathetic voice to a generation hurtling into their next chapter with no safety net and proves that our no-frills new normal doesn't mean a deficit of humor. In these essays, Gurwitch embraces homesharing, welcoming a housing-insecure young couple and a bunny rabbit into her home. The mother of a college student in recovery who sheds the gender binary, she relearns to parent, one pronoun at a time. She wades into the dating pool in a Miss Havisham-inspired line of lingerie and flunks the magic of tidying up. You're Leaving When? is for anybody who thought they had a semblance of security but wound up with a fragile economy and a blankie. Gurwitch offers stories of resilience, adaptability, low-rent redemption, and the kindness of strangers. Even in a muted Zoom.

Liverpool late 1950s. This is a story of three people: a suppressed mother; a father, projectionist at the local cinema which has seen better days; and their daughter Martha. It is a time of many escapes: Nureyev defects in London; Gagarin escapes the earth's atmosphere to be the first man in space; the Beatles escape the dreariness of Liverpool to seek their fortune in Hamburg. In Britain the drab 50s are giving way to the lively 60s and the young sense it. With shades of Billy Liar, and Absolute Beginners, this novel brilliantly captures that longing for freedom. Sixteen year old Martha is leaving home.
