Immer mehr Menschen mit geistiger Behinderung erreichen dank guter medizinischer und pflegerischer Betreuung ein hohes Alter. Beginnend mit dem Übergang in den Ruhestand sind dies die Bereiche des Wohnens, der sozialen Beziehungen, des Informiertseins und der Kommunikation, der Gesundheitsvorsorge und Gesundheitspflege, der Mobilität, der Freizeit, der Teilhabe an Bildung und Kultur sowie der Religiosität und der Spiritualität. Dabei werden sowohl deutschsprachige als auch internationale Konzepte und psychosoziale Unterstützungsmaßnahmen in den Blick genommen und in Bezug auf ihre Effekte erörtert. Die Publikation richtet sich an alle, die Menschen mit geistiger Behinderung auf ihr Leben und damit auch auf das Alter vorbereiten oder mit der Begleitung, Betreuung und Pflege dieser Menschen beruflich oder ehrenamtlich befasst sind: Lehrer, Erzieher, Sozialpädagogen, Mitarbeiter in Werkstätten für behinderte Menschen oder in der Behindertenhilfe, Pflegekräfte in der ambulanten Betreuung wie in stationären Wohneinrichtungen.
