El surgimiento y desarrollo de la sociología rural en España (como en otros países) han estado estrechamente ligados a la intervención del Estado en la agricultura y, con ello, a la política agraria. De este modo, la demanda institucional de conocimientos sobre la realidad social agraria se convierte en el principal condicionante de la producción, la práctica y la praxis social de esta disciplina. Con esta perspectiva, el autor aborda el estudio de la sociología rural en España entre 1939 y 1959, en el contexto del primer franquismo, y su relación con la política agraria del momento, para ver cómo ésta condiciona el saber y el hacer profesional de los sociólogos rurales (y cómo se produce la construcción administrativa de la propia disciplina) y también cómo los conocimientos de los sociólogos inciden en el diseño de la política agraria y en los discursos oficiales de los responsables políticos y administrativos, a través de la interacción entre los políticos, la elite burocrática y los expertos. Las peculiares condiciones históricas del momento (dictadura política y subdesarrollo económico) determinarán el subdesarrollo de la sociología rural y su subordinación a la política y la economía agrarias. Cristóbal Gómez Benito es doctor en Sociología. Funcionario en excedencia del Ministerio de Agricultura, ha sido director de la revista Agricultura y Sociedad. Actualmente es profesor de Sociología Rural y de Ecología Humana de la Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia. Es autor de varios trabajos de sociología rural y de historia del pensamiento social agrario.
