Ya en el siglo XIX evocaba A. Comte a Dios como «una medalla antigua con su relieve casi borrado». Un siglo después, M. Buber constataría el Eclipse de Dios. Este debilitamiento de la fe en Dios es uno de los factores desencadenantes del nacimiento de la Filosofía de la religión. A la crisis de la fe en Dios se sumaron otros acontecimientos que precipitaron el surgir de la nueva disciplina. En primer lugar, el giro antropológico. Hegel constató un cierto «cansancio de lo divino». En segundo lugar, se asistió al descubrimiento de otras religiones. Supuso una auténtica crisis para el cristianismo. Por último, y casi como consecuencia de lo anterior, la Europa cristiana asistió a la quiebra del pensamiento dogmático. Estos acontecimientos, unidos a otros factores sociales, culturales y económicos, dieron lugar al nacimiento de la Filosofía de la religión, es decir, a una forma de argumentar crítica, rigurosa, abierta y libre de ataduras confesionales.

Y esto tiene importantes consecuencias para la historia: «Apelar a la universal participación del pensamiento en todo lo humano y en la historia puede parecer insuficiente, porque estimamos que el pensamiento está subordinado al ser, a lo dado, haciendo de éste su base y su guía. A la filosofía, empero, le son atribuidos pensamientos propios, que la especulación produce por sí misma, sin consideración a lo que existe; y con esos pensamientos se dirige a la historia, tratándola como un material, y no dejándola tal como es, sino disponiéndola con arreglo al pensamiento y construyendo a priori una historia.» De G.
