Excerpt from Lecture Notes on General and Special Mineralogy Whatever their nature, they are generally of microscopic size; Thus we often find needles of Rutile and Tourmaline in Quartz. Magnetite in Muscovite Mica; Asbestos or Amphibole and Pyrite in Quartz and Calcite. We also find small cavities filled with water, solutions of salts, hydrocarbon compounds, and liquid or gaseous carbon dioxide. The Quartz crystals in 9. Granite at Branchville, Conn., contain so much liquid carbon dioxide that they are said to explode with considerable noise when broken. Many Topazes also contain the same substance. It is also quite com mon to find glassy inclusions in the minerals found in some lavas, as Leucite in some of the Italian rocks. The use of the microscope in the examination of thin sect-ions of rocks has shown how com mon all these different kinds of inclusions are. Minerals, then, have their homogeneity locally disturbed by all such inclusions as have been mentioned; but if we consider the mineral apart from the inclusion, it is homogeneous. Theoretically it is possible to separate these inclusions from the parent mineral, but practically, on account of the microscopic fineness to which they are sometimes reduced, the feat is often impossible. However, we may disregard such slight disturbances of homogeneity and consider the sub stance as a mineral, though in reality it is a mineral aggregate. If we use the word mineral in the most exclusive maxmer, then all inorganic secretions and concretions which have been made by animals or vegetables are not to be classed as minerals. Examples of such substances of animal origin would be corals, shells, and bones; while coal, amber, and infusorial earth represent the vego table kingdom. Neither are artificial inorganic substances made by man in his laboratory to be considered as minerals; so that all these facts show us that there are many inorganic substances which do not come within the province of Mineralogy, which is a branch of Inorganography, if I may coin a word which is used in other languages but not in English, which therefore is a more com prehensive subject than Mineralogy. Excerpt from Lectures on Mineralogy: Delivered at the School of Mines, Columbia College, Descriptive Mineralogy As it is quite essential that the notation of both Naumann and Dana should be understood, the first has been adopted in the text and the second used on the faces of the crystals. A table giving the compari son of the principal notations in use, has been given in the introduction. In the preparation of the work I have been greatly indebted to my assistant, Mr. J. H. Caswell, who autographed the drawings and prepared the notations of the faces of the crystals. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Mineralogy: An Introduction to the Study of Minerals and Crystals Furthermore, an attempt has been made to vitalize the subject as much as possible, and accordingly there are chapters on the importance of mineralogy in modern civilization, on gems and precious stones, and on the production and uses Of the important economic minerals. Numerous photographs and short Sketches of distinguished mineralogists have also been introduced in the hope that they will add a human touch. The chapters on crystallography are based very largely upon the senior author's Essentials of Crystallography, while much of the material in the descriptions of the 150 minerals given in this text has been taken from. His Descriptive Mineralogy. The determinative tables are an abridgment of the authors' Mineral Tables. We are greatly indebted to Mr. George R. Swain, technical expert in photography in the University of Michigan, whose varied experience and unusual skill made the excellent photographs of models and minerals possible; also to Dr. George F. Kunz for valuable assistance in securing a considerable number of very desirable photographs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Mineralogy The first edition of this introduction to the study of Mineralogy was published in 1892. Since then the book has been reprinted three times, but till now without revision. Starting with the idea of a Simple revision, I have found it necessary to rewrite and to enlarge it; but in doing this, I have been careful to retain the essential features of its original arrangement. Excerpt from A Text-Book of Important Minerals and Rocks: With Tables for the Determination of Minerals This book is the slow outgrowth of the efforts to meet the necessities of this institution for a convenient text-book of the important minerals and rocks. The number of mineral species has reached nearly one thousand and is constantly increasing. Of this number less than one-tenth is of common occurrence or can be considered of much economic importance, and a small proportion of this same tenth includes the essential constituents of all rocks. To embrace in descriptive text all mineral species necessarily results in an embarrassing mass of matter for the general student. Similar embarrassment, though to a less extent, is experienced in complete descriptions of all the rocks. To reduce these descriptions to a convenient yet satisfactory form for general students is the object of the present effort. There are described in the book about seventy-five distinct species of the important and, in the main, common minerals, and the principal members of the different classes of rocks. It is thought that the selection is extended enough for general purposes, and it includes abundant material for the study of both minerals and rocks. Excerpt from Elements of Mineralogy In the preparation of the revised edition of this book, it has been considered advantageous to make somewhat fundamental alterations in several places. The advance of Mineralogy in recent years, the changed points of view of economic mineralogists, and the needs of the present-day student, have all been deemed to justify such changes; indeed, one indication of the need for some such revision was shown in the ever-increasing collection of appendices that were to be found in the former editions. Nevertheless, it has been the reviser's endeavour to conserve as much as possible of the original, and all alterations have been carefully considered. Part I. treats of the Properties of Minerals. The original chapter on Crystallography has been entirely rewritten, and a chapter on Optical Properties has been added, which, it is hoped, will be found useful to the student. Part II. consists of the description of Mineral Species. Here the original arrangement has been followed, except in regard to the silicates. New introductions to the elements have been given; specially important among these are introductions to the principal metals, which, together with certain statistics, have been supplied by Mr. W. G. Wagner. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work.
