This textbook is related to a course that the author taught for many years at University of California, Berkeley. The course was originally intended for graduate students in the biological and health sciences. But it attracted students from other departments on the campus as well. In order for the book to serve the interest of a larger audience, the author made revisions of the outline, added new topics, and provided more examples for illustrations wherever needed. This invaluable book systematically presents fundamental methods of statistical analysis: from basic probability and statistical distributions, through fundamental concepts of statistical inference, to a collection of methods of analysis useful for scientific research. The text is rich in tables, diagrams, and examples, in addition to theoretical justification of the methods of analysis introduced. Each chapter has a section entitled "Exercises and Problems, " to accompaning the text. There are altogether about 300 exercises, whoseanswers are given. A section entitled "Proof of the Results in This Chapter" in each chapter provides interested readers with material for further study.

This book is the result of a suggestion made to me by Erich Lehmann of the Department of Statistics of the University of California at Berkeley. Throughout the writing of it I have enjoyed his assistance and companion ship and that of his wife, Juliet Shaffer. In the beginning, writing about a man like Neyman, who was alive and still very active, I planned to limit myself to his recollections and records and to my personal observations of him during his eighty-fifth year. It soon became apparent, however, that I would need to supplement these with the recollections of his colleagues and former students. With his consent I consulted them. I am most grateful for the time and effort which so many people expended in talking and writing to me. I would like to mention especially the assistance I received from Lucien Le Cam and Elizabeth Scott and the very friendly cooperation of Egon S. Pearson. Without the latter's careful preservation of Neyman's early letters I would have found it impossible to write in any detail of the years from 1926 to 1938. A number of libraries and archives also provided valuable material. These included the Bancroft Library and the various administrative archives of the University of California, the D.M.S. Watson Library at University College, the National Archives, and the Rockefeller Foundation Archives. The careful work of Kay Kewley, who was responsible for the organization of the Neyman papers, made my own work much easier.

Mathematical Statistics: A Decision Theoretic Approach presents an investigation of the extent to which problems of mathematical statistics may be treated by decision theory approach. This book deals with statistical theory that could be justified from a decision-theoretic viewpoint. Organized into seven chapters, this book begins with an overview of the elements of decision theory that are similar to those of the theory of games. This text then examines the main theorems of decision theory that involve two more notions, namely the admissibility of a decision rule and the completeness of a class of decision rules. Other chapters consider the development of theorems in decision theory that are valid in general situations. This book discusses as well the invariance principle that involves groups of transformations over the three spaces around which decision theory is built. The final chapter deals with sequential decision problems. This book is a valuable resource for first-year graduate students in mathematics.

Statisticians Of The Centuries written by P. Crepel and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-12-01 with Mathematics categories.
Statisticians of the Centuries aims to demonstrate the achievements of statistics to a broad audience, and to commemorate the work of celebrated statisticians. This is done through short biographies that put the statistical work in its historical and sociological context, emphasizing contributions to science and society in the broadest terms rather than narrow technical achievement. The discipline is treated from its earliest times and only individuals born prior to the 20th Century are included. The volume arose through the initiative of the International Statistical Institute (ISI), the principal representative association for international statistics (founded in 1885). Extensive consultations within the statistical community, and with prominent members of ISI in particular, led to the names of the 104 individuals who are included in the volume. The biographies were contributed by 73 authors from across the world. The editors are the well-known statisticians Chris Heyde and Eugene Seneta. Chris Heyde is Professor of Statistics at both Columbia University in New York and the Australian National University in Canberra. He is also Director of the Center for Applied Probability at Columbia. He has twice served as Vice President of the ISI, and also as President of the ISI's Bernoulli Society. Eugene Seneta is Professor of Mathematical Statistics at the University of Sydney and a Member of the ISI. His historical writings focus on 19th Century France and the Russian Empire. He has taught courses on the history of probability-based statistics in U.S. universities. Both editors are Fellows of the Australian Academy of Science and have, at various times, been awarded the Pitman Medal of the Statistical Society of Australia for their distinguished research contributions.
