Excerpt from Lectures for the People There is a complaint, in England, that there are few great preachers now, belonging to the Established Church (protes tant Episcopalian) of that country. Dr. Trench, Dean of Westminster, Dr. Croly, the Rev. Henry Melville, the Rev. Daniel Moore, Dr. Hook, Dr. Mcneile of Liverpool, Dr. Villiers, Bishop of Carlisle, Rev. F. D. Maurlce, the Rev. Hugh Stowell of Manchester, and a few others appear to stand almost alone, ln the Church of England, as eminent preachers, -as divines not only endowed with surpassing eloquence, but also as highly successful in their teaching. For to compose a good sermon and deliver it in an impresswe manner constitutes one thing, and to plant conviction into the listeners' minds constitutes another.' The mere elecu tionary art, the literary power of composition, may be acquired by study and a quick intellect; but the fear and love of God, which breathes vitality into pulpit oratory, cannot be gained by any human effort. Excerpt from Health Lectures for the People The third work done has been to consider and dis cuss many important questions in connection with health and sanitation. In regard to some of these questions, it was decided that it was better not to interfere, and in regard to others, information is still being sought; The Committee wish it to be understood, that the Object Of the Health Society is not to come into collision with the authorities, but rather to co-operate with them. It does not-wish to embarrass or to force legislation; neither do its members wish to make themselves disagreeable in any way. All they want to do, is to educate the public to observe and work for themselves; and the Committee hope, that in time, it will not be necessary for the Society to go to the Public, but that the Public will come to the Society and ask them to assist them in connection with many important health matters. Excerpt from Popular Lectures on 'the Essays and Reviews': Delivered in Various Places, and Addressed to the Common People These Lectures consist mainly of a plain exposure of the inconsistencies, illogical reasonings, and unscrip tural assertions of The Essays and Reviews. They have interested and instructed many, as given from pulpit or platform. Numbers have requested their appearance in print. They are, accordingly, pre sented just as reported. They may, by God's bless ing, guard the thoughtless many from the seductive and soul-destroying errors of What may be justly called the destructive theology. Excerpt from The Meaning of History: Two Lectures It is very amusing to hear what curious things they did in by-gone times. It is highly entertaining to know about forefathers of our own who were nearly as funny as Chinese. Then, again, it is very instructive as a study of character; we see in history the working of the human mind and will. Besides, it is necessary to avoid the blunders they committed in past days: there we collect a store of moral examples, and of political maxims; we learn to watch the signs of the times, and to be prepared for situations whenever they return. And it cannot be doubted, they add, that it is a branch of knowledge, and all knowledge is good. To know history, they conclude, is to be well-informed, is to be familiar with some of the finest examples of elegant and brilliant writing. Now, between the two, those who tell us plainly that history is of no use, and those who tell us vaguely that history is of fifty uses, I do not see much to choose. I thoroughly disagree with them both, and of the two I would rather deal with the former. Their opposition, at any rate, is concentrated into a single point, and may be met by a single and a direct answer. To them I would say, Are you consistent? Do you not in practice follow another course? In rejecting all connection with the facts and ideas of the past, are you not cutting the ground from under your own feet? You are an active politician and a staunch friend of the principles of the liberal party. What are the traditional principles of a party but a fraction, small, no doubt, but a sensible fraction of history? You are a warm friend of free trade. Well, but free trade has a history of its own; its strength lies in the traditions of a great victory achieved by right over might. You believe in the cause of progress. But what is the cause of progress but the extension of that civilization, of that change for the better which we have all witnessed or have learned to recognize as an established fact? Excerpt from History of Civilization, Being a Course of Lectures on the Origin and Development of the Main Institutions of Mankind By permission of the Board of Trustees, and of the Faculty of the University of Cincinnati, the author of the present book commenced to deliver a public course of lec tures on the History of Civilization at the lecture-hall of said University. The first lecture was given on the 13th of November, 1886, and, with a few interruptions, the course was continued on every Saturday. The interest of the general public in the course increased so rapidly that it became a mere matter of necessity to rent a larger hall, and thus, after the fourteenth lecture, the course was con tinned at the spacious hall of the Scottish Rite Church. As a further manifestation of the unabating interest of the public, the author was most urgently requested by the most competent people of the city to publish his lectures in book form. A list of subscriptions more than sufficient to cover the considerable expenses of the publication was filled in very short time, and the present book is a faithful copy of the lectures as delivered in the course. In the, circular, submitted to subscribers, the book was announced to extend to 400 pages; the book, however, numbers over 550 pages, and the author cherishes the belief that the additional 150 pages will not prove unwelcome to the reader. The highly finished cuts have been selected and furnished by Mr. Otto Reich, of Cincinnati. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Lectures On Ecclesiastical History Classic Reprint written by George Campbell and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07 with Religion categories.

Excerpt from Lectures on Ecclesiastical History I proceed now to consider the ends which may be answered by ecclesiastical history, and to inquire what is the readiest and most profitable way of studying it. Before that memorable era, the incarnation of the Son of God, the history of the church of God was the history of one particular people, first distinguished by the name of the patriarch Israel, (otherwise called jacob) whose descendants they were and after the loss of the ten tribes, who were carried into captivity by Shalma nezer, king of Assyria, denominated from Judah, one of the sons of Jacob, and one whose progeny the greater part of the remnant were, the nation of the Jews. The history of that mph, and the history of the church, was under the Mosaick economy the same thing. Neither do we find in the annals, and other remains of those ancient. Times, the least vestige of the distinction of a community into church and state, such as hath obtained universally in the nations who have received the christian law. This distinction hath given rise to a speciesof history, whereof the world before had not conceived so much as an idea. It may not therefore be improper, in the first place, to trace its origin, that we may the better apprehend what is meant by the history of the church.
