In this volume are collected notes of lectures delivered at the First In ternational Research Institute of the Mathematical Society of Japan. This conference, held at Tohoku University in July 1993, was devoted to geometry and global analysis. Subsequent to the conference, in answer to popular de mand from the participants, it was decided to publish the notes of the survey lectures. Written by the lecturers themselves, all experts in their respective fields, these notes are here presented in a single volume. It is hoped that they will provide a vivid account of the current research, from the introduc tory level up to and including the most recent results, and will indicate the direction to be taken by future researeh. This compilation begins with Jean-Pierre Bourguignon's notes entitled "An Introduction to Geometric Variational Problems," illustrating the gen eral framework of the field with many examples and providing the reader with a broad view of the current research. Following this, Kenji Fukaya's notes on "Geometry of Gauge Fields" are concerned with gauge theory and its applications to low-dimensional topology, without delving too deeply into technical detail. Special emphasis is placed on explaining the ideas of infi nite dimensional geometry that, in the literature, are often hidden behind rigorous formulations or technical arguments.

Differential geometry is a subject related to many fields in mathematics and the sciences. The authors of this book provide a vertically integrated introduction to differential geometry and geometric analysis. The material is presented in three distinct parts: an introduction to geometry via submanifolds of Euclidean space, a first course in Riemannian geometry, and a graduate special topics course in geometric analysis, and it contains more than enough content to serve as a good textbook for a course in any of these three topics. The reader will learn about the classical theory of submanifolds, smooth manifolds, Riemannian comparison geometry, bundles, connections, and curvature, the Chern?Gauss?Bonnet formula, harmonic functions, eigenfunctions, and eigenvalues on Riemannian manifolds, minimal surfaces, the curve shortening flow, and the Ricci flow on surfaces. This will provide a pathway to further topics in geometric analysis such as Ricci flow, used by Hamilton and Perelman to solve the Poincar‚ and Thurston geometrization conjectures, mean curvature flow, and minimal submanifolds. The book is primarily aimed at graduate students in geometric analysis, but it will also be of interest to postdoctoral researchers and established mathematicians looking for a refresher or deeper exploration of the topic.

"This new volume introduces readers to some of the current topics of research in the geometry of polyhedral surfaces, with applications to computer graphics. The main feature of the volume is a systematic introduction to the geometry of polyhedral surfaces based on the variational principle. The authors focus on using analytic methods in the study of some of the fundamental results and problems of polyhedral geometry: for instance, the Cauchy rigidity theorem, Thurston's circle packing theorem, rigidity of circle packing theorems, and Colin de Verdiere's variational principle. The present book is the first complete treatment of the vast, and expansively developed, field of polyhedral geometry."--Back cover.

Recent developments in topology and analysis have led to the creation of new lines of investigation in differential geometry. The 2000 Barrett Lectures present the background, context and main techniques of three such lines by means of surveys by leading researchers. The first chapter (by Alice Chang and Paul Yang) introduces new classes of conformal geometric invariants, and then applies powerful techniques in nonlinear differential equations to derive results on compactificationsof manifolds and on Yamabe-type variational problems for these invariants. This is followed by Karsten Grove's lectures, which focus on the use of isometric group actions and metric geometry techniques to understand new examples and classification results in Riemannian geometry, especially inconnection with positive curvature. The chapter written by Jon Wolfson introduces the emerging field of Lagrangian variational problems, which blends in novel ways the structures of symplectic geometry and the techniques of the modern calculus of variations. The lectures provide an up-do-date overview and an introduction to the research literature in each of their areas. The book is a very enjoyable read, which should prove useful to graduate students and researchers in differential geometryand geometric analysis.

Cartesian Currents In The Calculus Of Variations I written by Mariano Giaquinta and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-08-19 with Mathematics categories.
This monograph (in two volumes) deals with non scalar variational problems arising in geometry, as harmonic mappings between Riemannian manifolds and minimal graphs, and in physics, as stable equilibrium configuations in nonlinear elasticity or for liquid crystals. The presentation is selfcontained and accessible to non specialists. Topics are treated as far as possible in an elementary way, illustrating results with simple examples; in principle, chapters and even sections are readable independently of the general context, so that parts can be easily used for graduate courses. Open questions are often mentioned and the final section of each chapter discusses references to the literature and sometimes supplementary results. Finally, a detailed Table of Contents and an extensive Index are of help to consult this monograph

This is based on the course 'Calculus of Variations' taught at Peking University from 2006 to 2010 for advanced undergraduate to graduate students majoring in mathematics. The book contains 20 lectures covering both the theoretical background material as well as an abundant collection of applications. Lectures 1-8 focus on the classical theory of calculus of variations. Lectures 9-14 introduce direct methods along with their theoretical foundations. Lectures 15-20 showcase a broad collection of applications. The book offers a panoramic view of the very important topic on calculus of variations. This is a valuable resource not only to mathematicians, but also to those students in engineering, economics, and management, etc.
