This book is addressed to graduate students and research workers in theoretical physics who want a thorough introduction to group theory and Hopf algebras. It is suitable for a one-semester course in group theory or a two-semester course which also treats advanced topics. Starting from basic definitions, it goes on to treat both finite and Lie groups as well as Hopf algebras. Because of the diversity in the choice of topics, which does not place undue emphasis on finite or Lie groups, it should be useful to physicists working in many branches.A unique aspect of the book is its treatment of Hopf algebras in a form accessible to physicists. Hopf algebras are generalizations of groups and their concepts are acquiring importance in the treatment of conformal field theories, noncommutative spacetimes, topological quantum computation and other important domains of investigation. But there is a scarcity of treatments of Hopf algebras at a level and in a manner that physicists are comfortable with. This book addresses this need superbly. There are illustrative examples from physics scattered throughout the book and in its set of problems. It also has a good bibliography. These features should enhance its value to readers. The authors are senior physicists with considerable research and teaching experience in diverse aspects of fundamental physics. The book, being the outcome of their combined efforts, stands testament to their knowledge and pedagogical skills.

The authors of the present book share the view that groups and semigroups playa funda mental role in the structure of the complex systems which they are studying. A serious effort was made to implement this point of view by presenting the fundamental concepts pertaining to groups and semigroups before going into the various fields of application. The first two chapters are written in this spirit. The following seven chapters deal with groups in relation to specific systems and lead from basic notions to high-level applications. The systems under study are in all cases characterized by a high degree of complexity as found in the physics of many degrees of freedom and in the theory of automata and systems. In 1977 the authors from the University of Tiibingen (M. Dal Cin, G. John, P. Kramer, A. Rieckers, K. Scheerer and H. Stumpf) organized an International Summer School on Groups and Many-Body Physics. The lectures presented at this School dealt specifically with this interplay of groups and complex systems. The contributions of this book cover the fields which were treated in a condensed form at the Summer School.

This textbook, based on courses taught at Harvard University, is an introduction to group theory and its application to physics. The physical applications are considered as the mathematical theory is developed so that the presentation is unusually cohesive and well-motivated. Many modern topics are dealt with, and there is much discussion of the group SU(n) and its representations. This is of great significance in elementary particle physics. Applications to solid state physics are also considered. This stimulating account will prove to be an essential resource for senior undergraduate students and their teachers.

Supersymmetry is an extension of the successful Standard Model of particle physics; it relies on the principle that fermions and bosons are related by a symmetry, leading to an elegant predictive structure for quantum field theory. This textbook provides a comprehensive and pedagogical introduction to supersymmetry and spinor techniques in quantum field theory. By utilising the two-component spinor formalism for fermions, the authors provide many examples of practical calculations relevant for collider physics signatures, anomalies, and radiative corrections. They present in detail the component field and superspace formulations of supersymmetry and explore related concepts, including the theory of extended Higgs sectors, models of grand unification, and the origin of neutrino masses. Numerous exercises are provided at the end of each chapter. Aimed at graduate students and researchers, this volume provides a clear and unified treatment of theoretical concepts that are at the frontiers of high energy particle physics.

This book is a systematic presentation of the methods that have been developed for the interpretation of molecular modeling to the design of new chemicals. The main feature of the compilation is the co-ordination of the various scientific disciplines required for the generation of new compounds. The five chapters deal with such areas as structure and properties of organic compounds, relationships between structure and properties, and models for structure generation. The subject is covered in sufficient depth to provide readers with the necessary background to understand the modeling techniques. The book will be of value to chemists in industries involved in the manufacture of organic chemicals such as solvents refrigerants, blood substitutes, etc. It also serves as a reference work for researchers, academics, consultants, and students interested in molecular design.
