Excerpt from Lectures on Modern History, From the Irruption of the Northern Nations to the Close of the American Revolution Nothing so much embarrasses a student, who is beginning the study of history, as the difficulty he finds in selecting the best authors, ascertaining their intrinsic and relative merits, and in marking out for himself the most profitable course of reading. He is bewildered amidst a multitude of books, and perpetually at a loss, as he proceeds, to determine the comparative importance of periods, events, and characters. If he seeks a guide, he is either met by a dry catalogue of authors, arranged with little discrimination, or referred to abridgments and abstracts, as destitute of the soul and substance of history, properly so called, as a skeleton is of the spirit and proportions of a living man. His time is thus lost and his patience exhausted, while he makes scarcely any progress in those acquisitions which it is the design of history to communicate, and by which the mind should be expanded and strengthened at the same time that it is enriched with facts. Professor Smyth has undertaken to remove these obstacles; and, if we may judge by the manner in which his task has been executed in these volumes, it is safe to say that it could not have fallen into more skilful or experienced hands. Excerpt from Lectures on Modern History: Delivered in Oxford, 1859 61 I have failed, in spite of the kind assistance of my friends, the Librarian of the Bodleian and the Keeper of the Archives, to trace the real author of what we must allow to have been an enlightened and far-sighted scheme - a scheme which, had it taken effect, might have supplied Parliament and the public service in the last century with highly-trained legislators and statesmen, and perhaps have torn some dark and disastrous pages from our history. It is not likely that the praise is due to the king himself, who, though not without sense and public spirit, was indifferent to intellectual pursuits. Conjecture points to Sir Robert Walpole. That minis ter was at the height of power when the professorship was founded under George I. When the foundation was confirmed under George II., he had just thrust aside the feeble pretensions of Sir Spencer Compton, and gathered the reins of government, for a moment placed in the weak hands of the favorite, again into his own strong and skillful grasp. If Walpole was the real founder - if he even sanctioned the foundation - it is a remarkable testimony from a political leader of a turn of mind prac tical to coarseness, and who had discarded the literary statesmen of the Somers and Halifax school, to the value of high political education as a qualification for the pub lic service. It is also creditable to the memory of a min ister, the reputed father of the system of Parliamentary corruption, that he should have so far anticipated one of the best of modern reforms as to have been willing to devote a large amount of his patronage to merit, and to take that merit on the recommendation of Universities, one of which, at least, was by no means friendly to the crown. This circumstance will account for their unusually late appearance, and will also suggest other considerations to the good sense of those who may read them. I would particularly apologise for the compression of style which has sometimes announced, within the compass of a single sentence, principles which, in so far as they are broad and original, might claim many pages for their due elucidation. This applies particularly to parts of the first lecture. But I felt restricted as to time in the recital, and therefore condensed into as few words as possible my expressions. Subsequent reflection on the part of those who heard me, it was hoped, might sufficiently expand and appreciate them. I will not offer any excuse for the speculative character of this introduction to a study which finds its chief obstacle, as an element of education, in the practical interests and passions which it might engage. To some passages, especially those which are entirely based upon special and novel researches, it would have been perhaps more appropriate to add remarks upon those topics of inquiry, which could not well be discussed in oral delivery, as well as to adduce the less known authorities. Such was at first my intention. Most of the remarks, how ever, would have swollen into treatises; the character of the work would thereby have become totally changed, and several years would probably have elapsed before its completion. I believed, however, that several of those, who in Germany, or elsewhere, where the German language is known, pay attention to, and take an interest in, my labours, would prefer to have these reflections on modern times at once, and in the very form in which they now appear. Excerpt from Seventeen Lectures on the Study of Medieval and Modern History and Kindred Subjects: Delivered at Oxford, Under Statutory Obligation in the Years 1867 1884 If I were asked what is my reason for printing these lectures, I might be at a loss for an answer. They are not printed by request, or because they seem to me worthy to be preserved, or because they are likely to be useful reading, or because they supply a want. It may be that they owe their present form to the fact that the love of correcting proof-sheets has become a leading passion with the author. Some part of the volume may be readable, some part useful: it may be that the useful part is hard reading, and the readable part trifling, but I will give myself, unphilosophic as it may be, the benefit of a doubt. The lectures were written under the pressure of statutory compulsion, and against the grain. I know, by sad experience, how often the best lecture, the best sermon on which I have most prided myself - eloquent, lucid, learned, logical, - has gone the way of all fireworks. There is a chance that something may be said for work elicited by forcible pressure, under weariness and vexation, against stress of time, under statutory obligation and a conscientious sense of duty. The statute under which these lectures were delivered was a burdensome statute to me; it would not be so to every professor, but the discomforts of working under it could only be explained by experience: and the statute itself is now a thing of the past.
