The present work treats p-adic properties of solutions of the hypergeometric differential equation d2 d ̃ ( x(l - x) dx + (c(l - x) + (c - 1 - a - b)x) dx - ab)y = 0, 2 with a, b, c in 4) n Zp, by constructing the associated Frobenius structure. For this construction we draw upon the methods of Alan Adolphson [1] in his 1976 work on Hecke polynomials. We are also indebted to him for the account (appearing as an appendix) of the relation between this differential equation and certain L-functions. We are indebted to G. Washnitzer for the method used in the construction of our dual theory (Chapter 2). These notes represent an expanded form of lectures given at the U. L. P. in Strasbourg during the fall term of 1980. This volume presents the results of the AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference held at the University of Washington (Seattle). The talks were devoted to various aspects of the theory of algebraic curves over finite fields and its numerous applications. The three basic themes are the following: 1. Curves with many rational points. Several articles describe main approaches to the construction of such curves: the Drinfeld modules and fiber product methods, the moduli space approach, and the constructions using classical curves. 2. Monodromy groups of characteristic $p$ covers. A number of authors presented the results and conjectures related to the study of the monodromy groups of curves over finite fields. In particular, they study the monodromy groups from genus 0 covers, reductions of covers, and explicit computation of monodromy groups over finite fields. 3. Zeta functions and trace formulas. To a large extent, papers devoted to this topic reflect the contributions of Professor Bernard Dwork and his students. This conference was the last attended by Professor Dwork before his death, and several papers inspired by his presence include commentaries about the applications of trace formulas and L-function. The volume also contains a detailed introduction paper by Professor Michael Fried, which helps the reader to navigate the material presented in the book.

From its birth (in Babylon?) till 1936 the theory of quadratic forms dealt almost exclusively with forms over the real field, the complex field or the ring of integers. Only as late as 1937 were the foundations of a theory over an arbitrary field laid. This was in a famous paper by Ernst Witt. Still too early, apparently, because it took another 25 years for the ideas of Witt to be pursued, notably by Albrecht Pfister, and expanded into a full branch of algebra. Around 1960 the development of algebraic topology and algebraic K-theory led to the study of quadratic forms over commutative rings and hermitian forms over rings with involutions. Not surprisingly, in this more general setting, algebraic K-theory plays the role that linear algebra plays in the case of fields. This book exposes the theory of quadratic and hermitian forms over rings in a very general setting. It avoids, as far as possible, any restriction on the characteristic and takes full advantage of the functorial aspects of the theory. The advantage of doing so is not only aesthetical: on the one hand, some classical proofs gain in simplicity and transparency, the most notable examples being the results on low-dimensional spinor groups; on the other hand new results are obtained, which went unnoticed even for fields, as in the case of involutions on 16-dimensional central simple algebras. The first chapter gives an introduction to the basic definitions and properties of hermitian forms which are used throughout the book.
