Excerpt from Lectures on Principles of Surgery Many valuable books have been published on Principles of Surgery, but some are now out of date, some give undue promi ncnoc to the writers' personal views, some are incomplete as to the subjects discussed, and some are so exhaustive as to be useful only for reference. The author does not expect the present modest volume to be free from criticism. It is simply a series of lectures based on standard authorities and is intended for the use of students and practitioners who desire the most recent views of surgical path ology and have not the time or opportunity to read more ambi tious works. Any merit the book possesses will be found in the order and system of arrangement and in the clearness and brevity of description. Excerpt from Lectures on the Principles and Practice of Surgery IT may be considered by many that a book upon Surgery is not at the present time one of the desiderata of the medical profession; and such a remark would, I think, be quite true, if it were intended to apply to a work on the abstract principles of the science. It is not without mature consideration that I have determined upon publishing the present vol. Ume; but I have come to the conclusion, that as its contents are of a practical character, embodying the experience of twenty-five years, dur ing which time I have occupied the position of surgeon to Guy's Hos pita], it would be found useful, not only to the student, but also to those who have entered upon the practice of their profession. It must be borne in mind, that it has not been my intention to write a systematic work on the elements of the science of surgery. These lectures were originally delivered before my hospital pupils; and in thus presenting them to the profession in a collected form, my object has been to furnish a useful compendium of surgery, in which the student may meet with a clear account of the practice of that science, established, not only on my own experience, but likewise upon the best acknowledged authorities. That the practice may not bear in some cases the character of empiricism, I have endeavoured, so far as I have been able to lay down the general principles of science upon which the practice is based at the same time I have avoided as much as possible any discussion of the hypotheses of the time, deeming my practical book an unfit medium for such matter. The multi-authored, multi-institutional, and multi-specialty-based text is designed as a valuable resource for surgeons working on the maxillofacial region. Meant to be a clinically based history of the past, the present, and the future of the field, this is a one-of-a-kind text that will cater to a variety of professions: from oral & maxillofacial surgeons, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, otolaryngologists – head and neck surgeons, cosmetic surgeons and the general dental practitioner. The History of Maxillofacial Surgery: An Evidence-Based Journey is divided into three sections for ease of understanding: The first section gives an overview of the early history; the second section provides a discussion of conventional procedures; and the third section gives a history of advanced procedures and techniques. By understanding the fundamental procedures and techniques of the field, practitioners can continue to further the field by building upon the past. Including historic case studies paired with real patient photos, this text details why professionals do what they do today with insight directly from the clinic. To provide a unique perspective the book is edited by three individuals at different stages of their careers. Each chapter is authored by a young surgeon paired with a seasoned surgeon.

The vivid, often gruesome portrait of the 18th-century pioneering surgeon and father of modern medicine, John Hunter. When Robert Louis Stevenson wrote his gothic horror story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, he based the house of the genial doctor-turned-fiend on the home of John Hunter. The choice was understandable, for Hunter was both widely acclaimed and greatly feared. From humble origins, John Hunter rose to become the most famous anatomist and surgeon of the eighteenth century. In an age when operations were crude, extremely painful, and often fatal, he rejected medieval traditions to forge a revolution in surgery founded on pioneering scientific experiments. Using the knowledge he gained from countless human dissections, Hunter worked to improve medical care for both the poorest and the best-known figures of the era—including Sir Joshua Reynolds and the young Lord Byron. An insatiable student of all life-forms, Hunter was also an expert naturalist. He kept exotic creatures in his country menagerie and dissected the first animals brought back by Captain Cook from Australia. Ultimately his research led him to expound highly controversial views on the age of the earth, as well as equally heretical beliefs on the origins of life more than sixty years before Darwin published his famous theory. Although a central figure of the Enlightenment, Hunter’s tireless quest for human corpses immersed him deep in the sinister world of body snatching. He paid exorbitant sums for stolen cadavers and even plotted successfully to steal the body of Charles Byrne, famous in his day as the “Irish giant.” In The Knife Man, Wendy Moore unveils John Hunter’s murky and macabre world—a world characterized by public hangings, secret expeditions to dank churchyards, and gruesome human dissections in pungent attic rooms. This is a fascinating portrait of a remarkable pioneer and his determined struggle to haul surgery out of the realms of meaningless superstitious ritual and into the dawn of modern medicine.

"In the preface to this impressive and well-produced book, the editors state that their aim is not to describe a new surgical specialty, since most surgeons will soon need to be "geriatric surgeons," but to assemble a comprehensive account that will allow "all providers of healthcare to the elderly to understand the issues involved in choosing surgery as a treatment option for their patients." This is a useful book that deserves to do well. I hope that the editors and their publisher will have the stamina to make this the first of several editions, as it is clear that updated information about surgery in the elderly will be required to keep pace with this important field."
