This book gives an exposition of the relations among the following three topics: monoidal tensor categories (such as a category of representations of a quantum group), 3-dimensional topological quantum field theory, and 2-dimensional modular functors (which naturally arise in 2-dimensional conformal field theory). The following examples are discussed in detail: the category of representations of a quantum group at a root of unity and the Wess-Zumino-Witten modular functor. The idea that these topics are related first appeared in the physics literature in the study of quantum field theory. Pioneering works of Witten and Moore-Seiberg triggered an avalanche of papers, both physical and mathematical, exploring various aspects of these relations. Upon preparing to lecture on the topic at MIT, however, the authors discovered that the existing literature was difficult and that there were gaps to fill. The text is wholly expository and finely succinct. It gathers results, fills existing gaps, and simplifies some proofs. The book makes an important addition to the existing literature on the topic. It would be suitable as a course text at the advanced-graduate level.

Is there a vector space whose dimension is the golden ratio? Of course not—the golden ratio is not an integer! But this can happen for generalizations of vector spaces—objects of a tensor category. The theory of tensor categories is a relatively new field of mathematics that generalizes the theory of group representations. It has deep connections with many other fields, including representation theory, Hopf algebras, operator algebras, low-dimensional topology (in particular, knot theory), homotopy theory, quantum mechanics and field theory, quantum computation, theory of motives, etc. This book gives a systematic introduction to this theory and a review of its applications. While giving a detailed overview of general tensor categories, it focuses especially on the theory of finite tensor categories and fusion categories (in particular, braided and modular ones), and discusses the main results about them with proofs. In particular, it shows how the main properties of finite-dimensional Hopf algebras may be derived from the theory of tensor categories. Many important results are presented as a sequence of exercises, which makes the book valuable for students and suitable for graduate courses. Many applications, connections to other areas, additional results, and references are discussed at the end of each chapter.

Due to the strong appeal and wide use of this monograph, it is now available in its third revised edition. The monograph gives a systematic treatment of 3-dimensional topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) based on the work of the author with N. Reshetikhin and O. Viro. This subject was inspired by the discovery of the Jones polynomial of knots and the Witten-Chern-Simons field theory. On the algebraic side, the study of 3-dimensional TQFTs has been influenced by the theory of braided categories and the theory of quantum groups. The book is divided into three parts. Part I presents a construction of 3-dimensional TQFTs and 2-dimensional modular functors from so-called modular categories. This gives a vast class of knot invariants and 3-manifold invariants as well as a class of linear representations of the mapping class groups of surfaces. In Part II the technique of 6j-symbols is used to define state sum invariants of 3-manifolds. Their relation to the TQFTs constructed in Part I is established via the theory of shadows. Part III provides constructions of modular categories, based on quantum groups and skein modules of tangles in the 3-space. This fundamental contribution to topological quantum field theory is accessible to graduate students in mathematics and physics with knowledge of basic algebra and topology. It is an indispensable source for everyone who wishes to enter the forefront of this fascinating area at the borderline of mathematics and physics. Contents: Invariants of graphs in Euclidean 3-space and of closed 3-manifolds Foundations of topological quantum field theory Three-dimensional topological quantum field theory Two-dimensional modular functors 6j-symbols Simplicial state sums on 3-manifolds Shadows of manifolds and state sums on shadows Constructions of modular categories

This volume contains the proceedings of the thematic program on ?Quantum symmetries: Tensor categories, topological quantum field theories, and vertex algebras? held from October 10?November 4, 2022, at the Centre de Recherches Math‚matiques, Montr‚al, Qu‚bec, Canada. Quantum symmetries is a rapidly expanding area in which tensor categories are applied to mathematical physics, in particular, to conformal and topological quantum field theories. These fields, in turn, connect to a huge variety of modern mathematics, including representation theory, vertex operator algebras, Hopf algebras, link and knot invariants, geometry, subfactors, combinatorics, and so much more. The thematic program on quantum symmetries featured advanced lecture courses and research seminars by international leaders of their respective fields. This proceedings volume is centered on the active research of the area, but also includes an in-depth survey of one of the main topics, $W$-algebras.

Hopf algebras have proved to be very interesting structures with deep connections to various areas of mathematics, particularly through quantum groups. Indeed, the study of Hopf algebras, their representations, their generalizations, and the categories related to all these objects has an interdisciplinary nature. It finds methods, relationships, motivations and applications throughout algebra, category theory, topology, geometry, quantum field theory, quantum gravity, and also combinatorics, logic, and theoretical computer science. This volume portrays the vitality of contemporary research in Hopf algebras. Altogether, the articles in the volume explore essential aspects of Hopf algebras and some of their best-known generalizations by means of a variety of approaches and perspectives. They make use of quite different techniques that are already consolidated in the area of quantum algebra. This volume demonstrates the diversity and richness of its subject. Most of its papers introduce the reader to their respective contexts and structures through very expository preliminary sections.

Homotopy Quantum Field Theory (HQFT) is a branch of Topological Quantum Field Theory founded by E. Witten and M. Atiyah. It applies ideas from theoretical physics to study principal bundles over manifolds and, more generally, homotopy classes of maps from manifolds to a fixed target space. This book is the first systematic exposition of Homotopy Quantum Field Theory. It starts with a formal definition of an HQFT and provides examples of HQFTs in all dimensions. The main body of the text is focused on $2$-dimensional and $3$-dimensional HQFTs. A study of these HQFTs leads to new algebraic objects: crossed Frobenius group-algebras, crossed ribbon group-categories, and Hopf group-coalgebras. These notions and their connections with HQFTs are discussed in detail. The text ends with several appendices including an outline of recent developments and a list of open problems. Three appendices by M. Muger and A. Virelizier summarize their work in this area. The book is addressed to mathematicians, theoretical physicists, and graduate students interested in topological aspects of quantum field theory. The exposition is self-contained and well suited for a one-semester graduate course. Prerequisites include only basics of algebra and topology.

Few people have proved more influential in the field of differential and algebraic geometry, and in showing how this links with mathematical physics, than Nigel Hitchin. Oxford University's Savilian Professor of Geometry has made fundamental contributions in areas as diverse as: spin geometry, instanton and monopole equations, twistor theory, symplectic geometry of moduli spaces, integrables systems, Higgs bundles, Einstein metrics, hyperkähler geometry, Frobenius manifolds, Painlevé equations, special Lagrangian geometry and mirror symmetry, theory of grebes, and many more. He was previously Rouse Ball Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University, as well as Professor of Mathematics at the University of Warwick, is a Fellow of the Royal Society and has been the President of the London Mathematical Society. The chapters in this fascinating volume, written by some of the greats in their fields (including four Fields Medalists), show how Hitchin's ideas have impacted on a wide variety of subjects. The book grew out of the Geometry Conference in Honour of Nigel Hitchin, held in Madrid, with some additional contributions, and should be required reading for anyone seeking insights into the overlap between geometry and physics.

This volume contains the proceedings of the AMS Special Session on Topological Phases of Matter and Quantum Computation, held from September 24–25, 2016, at Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine. Topological quantum computing has exploded in popularity in recent years. Sitting at the triple point between mathematics, physics, and computer science, it has the potential to revolutionize sub-disciplines in these fields. The academic importance of this field has been recognized in physics through the 2016 Nobel Prize. In mathematics, some of the 1990 Fields Medals were awarded for developments in topics that nowadays are fundamental tools for the study of topological quantum computation. Moreover, the practical importance of this discipline has been underscored by recent industry investments. The relative youth of this field combined with a high degree of interest in it makes now an excellent time to get involved. Furthermore, the cross-disciplinary nature of topological quantum computing provides an unprecedented number of opportunities for cross-pollination of mathematics, physics, and computer science. This can be seen in the variety of works contained in this volume. With articles coming from mathematics, physics, and computer science, this volume aims to provide a taste of different sub-disciplines for novices and a wealth of new perspectives for veteran researchers. Regardless of your point of entry into topological quantum computing or your experience level, this volume has something for you.
