This is the second of two volumes which will provide an introduction to modern developments in the representation theory of finite groups and associative algebras. The subject is viewed from the perspective of homological algebra and the theory of representations of finite dimensional algebras; the author emphasises modular representations and the homological algebra associated with their categories. This volume concentrates on the cohomology of groups, always with representations in view, however. It begins with a background reference chapter, then proceeds to an overview of the algebraic topology and K-theory associated with cohomology of groups, especially the work of Quillen. Later chapters look at algebraic and topological proofs of the finite generation of the cohomology ring of a finite group, and an algebraic approach to the Steenrod operations in group cohomology. The book cumulates in a chapter dealing with the theory of varieties for modules. Much of the material presented here has never appeared before in book form. Kuo-Tsai Chen (1923-1987) is best known to the mathematics community for his work on iterated integrals and power series connections in conjunction with his research on the cohomology of loop spaces. His work is intimately related to the theory of minimal models as developed by Dennis Sullivan, whose own work was in part inspired by the research of Chen. An outstanding and original mathematician, Chen's work falls naturally into three periods: his early work on group theory and links in the three sphere; his subsequent work on formal differential equations, which gradually developed into his most powerful and important work; and his work on iterated integrals and homotopy theory, which occupied him for the last twenty years of his life. The goal of Chen's iterated integrals program, which is a de Rham theory for path spaces, was to study the interaction of topology and analysis through path integration. The present volume is a comprehensive collection of Chen's mathematical publications preceded by an article, "The Life and Work of Kuo-Tsai Chen," placing his work and research interests into their proper context and demonstrating the power and scope of his influence.

Topology occupies a central position in the mathematics of today. One of the most useful ideas to be introduced in the past sixty years is the concept of fibre bundle, which provides an appropriate framework for studying differential geometry and much else. Fibre bundles are examples of the kind of structures studied in fibrewise topology. Just as homotopy theory arises from topology, so fibrewise homotopy the ory arises from fibrewise topology. In this monograph we provide an overview of fibrewise homotopy theory as it stands at present. It is hoped that this may stimulate further research. The literature on the subject is already quite extensive but clearly there is a great deal more to be done. Efforts have been made to develop general theories of which ordinary homotopy theory, equivariant homotopy theory, fibrewise homotopy theory and so forth will be special cases. For example, Baues [7] and, more recently, Dwyer and Spalinski [53], have presented such general theories, derived from an earlier theory of Quillen, but none of these seem to provide quite the right framework for our purposes. We have preferred, in this monograph, to develop fibre wise homotopy theory more or less ab initio, assuming only a basic knowledge of ordinary homotopy theory, at least in the early sections, but our aim has been to keep the exposition reasonably self-contained.
