There are good reasons to believe that nonstandard analysis, in some ver sion or other, will be the analysis of the future. KURT GODEL This book is a compilation and development of lecture notes written for a course on nonstandard analysis that I have now taught several times. Students taking the course have typically received previous introductions to standard real analysis and abstract algebra, but few have studied formal logic. Most of the notes have been used several times in class and revised in the light of that experience. The earlier chapters could be used as the basis of a course at the upper undergraduate level, but the work as a whole, including the later applications, may be more suited to a beginning graduate course. This prefacedescribes my motivationsand objectives in writingthe book. For the most part, these remarks are addressed to the potential instructor. Mathematical understanding develops by a mysterious interplay between intuitive insight and symbolic manipulation. Nonstandard analysis requires an enhanced sensitivity to the particular symbolic form that is used to ex press our intuitions, and so the subject poses some unique and challenging pedagogical issues. The most fundamental ofthese is how to turn the trans fer principle into a working tool of mathematical practice. I have found it vi Preface unproductive to try to give a proof of this principle by introducing the formal Tarskian semantics for first-order languages and working through the proofofLos's theorem.

Introduction To Elliptic Curves And Modular Forms written by Neal I. Koblitz and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Mathematics categories.
This textbook covers the basic properties of elliptic curves and modular forms, with emphasis on certain connections with number theory. The ancient "congruent number problem" is the central motivating example for most of the book. My purpose is to make the subject accessible to those who find it hard to read more advanced or more algebraically oriented treatments. At the same time I want to introduce topics which are at the forefront of current research. Down-to-earth examples are given in the text and exercises, with the aim of making the material readable and interesting to mathematicians in fields far removed from the subject of the book. With numerous exercises (and answers) included, the textbook is also intended for graduate students who have completed the standard first-year courses in real and complex analysis and algebra. Such students would learn applications of techniques from those courses. thereby solidifying their under standing of some basic tools used throughout mathematics. Graduate stu dents wanting to work in number theory or algebraic geometry would get a motivational, example-oriented introduction. In addition, advanced under graduates could use the book for independent study projects, senior theses, and seminar work.

Kurt Hensel (1861-1941) discovered the p-adic numbers around the turn of the century. These exotic numbers (or so they appeared at first) are now well-established in the mathematical world and used more and more by physicists as well. This book offers a self-contained presentation of basic p-adic analysis. The author is especially interested in the analytical topics in this field. Some of the features which are not treated in other introductory p-adic analysis texts are topological models of p-adic spaces inside Euclidean space, a construction of spherically complete fields, a p-adic mean value theorem and some consequences, a special case of Hazewinkel's functional equation lemma, a remainder formula for the Mahler expansion, and most importantly a treatment of analytic elements.

A brand new appendix by Oscar Garcia-Prada graces this third edition of a classic work. In developing the tools necessary for the study of complex manifolds, this comprehensive, well-organized treatment presents in its opening chapters a detailed survey of recent progress in four areas: geometry (manifolds with vector bundles), algebraic topology, differential geometry, and partial differential equations. Wells’s superb analysis also gives details of the Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations on Kahler manifolds, Griffiths's period mapping, quadratic transformations, and Kodaira's vanishing and embedding theorems. Oscar Garcia-Prada’s appendix gives an overview of the developments in the field during the decades since the book appeared.

Progress in the theory of economic equilibria and in game theory has proceeded hand in hand with that of the mathematical tools used in the field, namely nonlinear analysis and, in particular, convex analysis. Jean-Pierre Aubin, one of the leading specialists in nonlinear analysis and its application to economics, has written a rigorous and concise - yet still elementary and self-contained - textbook providing the mathematical tools needed to study optima and equilibria, as solutions to problems, arising in economics, management sciences, operations research, cooperative and non-cooperative games, fuzzy games etc. It begins with the foundations of optimization theory, and mathematical programming, and in particular convex and nonsmooth analysis. Nonlinear analysis is then presented, first game-theoretically, then in the framework of set valued analysis. These results are then applied to the main classes of economic equilibria. The book contains numerous exercises and problems: the latter allow the reader to venture into areas of nonlinear analysis that lie beyond the scope of the book and of most graduate courses.

This book deals with several aspects of what is now called "explicit number theory." The central theme is the solution of Diophantine equations, i.e., equations or systems of polynomial equations which must be solved in integers, rational numbers or more generally in algebraic numbers. This theme, in particular, is the central motivation for the modern theory of arithmetic algebraic geometry. In this text, this is considered through three of its most basic aspects. The local aspect, global aspect, and the third aspect is the theory of zeta and L-functions. This last aspect can be considered as a unifying theme for the whole subject.

If people do not believe that mathematics is simple, it is only because they do not realize how complicated life is. —John von Neumann While this is a course in analysis, our approach departs from the beaten path in some ways. Firstly, we emphasize a variety of connections to themes from neighboring fields, such as wavelets, fractals and signals; topics typically not included in a gradu ate analysis course. This in turn entails excursions into domains with a probabilistic flavor. Yet the diverse parts of the book follow a common underlying thread, and to gether they constitute a good blend; each part in the mix naturally complements the other. In fact, there are now good reasons for taking a wider view of analysis, for ex ample the fact that several applied trends have come to interact in new and exciting ways with traditional mathematical analysis—as it was taught in graduate classes for generations. One consequence of these impulses from "outside" is that conventional boundaries between core disciplines in mathematics have become more blurred. Fortunately this branching out does not mean that students will need to start out with any different or additional prerequisites. In fact, the ideas involved in this book are intuitive, natural, many of them visual, and geometric. The required background is quite minimal and it does not go beyond what is typically required in most graduate programs.

I have been very gratified by the response to the first edition, which has resulted in it being sold out. This put some pressure on me to come out with a second edition and now, finally, here it is. The original text has stayed much the same, the major change being in the treatment of the hook formula which is now based on the beautiful Novelli-Pak-Stoyanovskii bijection (NPS 97]. I have also added a chapter on applications of the material from the first edition. This includes Stanley's theory of differential posets (Stn 88, Stn 90] and Fomin's related concept of growths (Fom 86, Fom 94, Fom 95], which extends some of the combinatorics of Sn-representations. Next come a couple of sections showing how groups acting on posets give rise to interesting representations that can be used to prove unimodality results (Stn 82]. Finally, we discuss Stanley's symmetric function analogue of the chromatic polynomial of a graph (Stn 95, Stn ta]. I would like to thank all the people, too numerous to mention, who pointed out typos in the first edition. My computer has been severely reprimanded for making them. Thanks also go to Christian Krattenthaler, Tom Roby, and Richard Stanley, all of whom read portions of the new material and gave me their comments. Finally, I would like to give my heartfelt thanks to my editor at Springer, Ina Lindemann, who has been very supportive and helpful through various difficult times.

Algebra fulfills a definite need to provide a self-contained, one volume, graduate level algebra text that is readable by the average graduate student and flexible enough to accomodate a wide variety of instructors and course contents. The guiding philosophical principle throughout the text is that the material should be presented in the maximum usable generality consistent with good pedagogy. Therefore it is essentially self-contained, stresses clarity rather than brevity and contains an unusually large number of illustrative exercises. The book covers major areas of modern algebra, which is a necessity for most mathematics students in sufficient breadth and depth.
