Excerpt from Lectures on the Rise and Development of Medieval Architecture, Vol. 1 of 2 The Lectures are naturally somewhat disconnected and having been written both at various times and for audiences often changing, may be found in some in stances to repeat the same facts and ideas, for which, as well as for too great a prolixity of style, I beg to apologise. They were written with much zeal; and, thanks to my staff, and to my pupils, my sons, and others, they were magnificently and profusely illustrated; more so, perhaps, than any such Lectures had ever been before. Excerpt from Lectures on the Rise and Development of Medieval Architecture, Vol. 1 of 2 Only half of the following Lectures were delivered by me, as the Professor of Architecture, at the Royal Academy. The first seven were delivered while Professor Cockerell held the Chair; but, owing to his infirm state of health, I being then an Associate, was, in conjunction with Mr. Smirke, called in to relieve him of this duty. The eighth and ninth Lectures were prepared six years later, after Mr. Smirke had retired, and those which follow, when I had succeeded him in the Professorship. The Lectures are naturally somewhat disconnected; and having been written both at various times and for audiences often changing, may be found in some instances to repeat the same facts and ideas, for which, as well as for too great a prolixity of style, I beg to apologise. Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-Gilbert Scott RA (July 13, 1811 - March 27, 1878), was a prolific English Gothic Revival architect, associated primarily with the design, construction, and renovation of churches and cathedrals, though he began his career as a leading house designer for work . More than 800 buildings were designed or altered by him. Scott was the architect of many iconic buildings, including the Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras Station, the Albert Memorial and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, all in London, St Mary's Cathedral, Glasgow, the main building of the University of Glasgow, St Mary's Cathedral in Edinburgh and King's College Chapel, London. Born in Gawcott, Buckingham, Buckinghamshire, Scott was the son of a clergyman and the grandson of biblical commentator Thomas Scott. He studied architecture as a student of James Edmeston and, from 1832 to 1834, worked as an assistant to Henry Roberts. He also worked as an assistant for his friend, Sampson Kempthorne, who specialized in designing work houses, a field in which Scott would begin his independent career. St John Parish Church in Wall, Staffordshire. Scott's first job was built in 1833.

Oxford Jackson written by William Whyte and has been published by Clarendon Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-08-31 with History categories.
In the late nineteenth century one man changed Oxford forever. T. G. Jackson built the Examination Schools, the Bridge of Sighs, worked at a dozen colleges, and restored a score of other Oxford icons. He also built for many of the major public schools, for the University of Cambridge, and at the Inns of Court. A friend of William Morris, he was a pioneering member of the arts and crafts moment. A distinguished historian, he also restored dozens of houses and churches - and ensured the survival of Winchester Cathedral. As an architectural theorist he was a leader of the generation that rejected the Gothic Revival and sought to develop a new and modern style of building. Drawing on extensive archival work, and illustrated with a hundred images, this is the first in-depth analysis of Jackson's career ever written. It sheds light on a little-known architect and reveals that his buildings, his books, and his work as an arts and craftsman were not just important in their own right, they were also part of a wider social change. Jackson was the architect of choice for a particular group of people, for the 'intellectual aristocracy' of late Victorian England. His buildings were a means by which they could articulate their identity and demonstrate their distinctiveness. They reformed the universities and the schools whilst he refashioned their image. Essential reading for anyone interested in Victorian architecture and nineteenth-century society, this book will also be of interest to all those who know and love Oxford or Cambridge.
