Leeds In The Great War written by Stephen Wade and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Leeds (England) categories.

In 1914, when the call came for Kitchener's new army to be recruited, Leeds was at the heart of the West Riding conurbation, where many men joined the Pals' Battalions. However, the city was to participate in the war effort in so many other ways. It was a textile town, with a long history of tailoring and clothing manufacture, and kept the troops in uniform throughout the war. Even then it was a hub for engineering and a vital transport link in the North, with the railway being its calling card, which remains true a century later. Leeds is a city renowned for medicine, and the hospitals played their part both on home soil and in the gruelling conditions of the front line. Despite its reputation of having a socialist and radical population, the city - led by its mayors and councils - fought hard to gather resources and collect funds for the war effort. In this book, Stephen Wade collects the human stories from the complexities that the Great War created; documenting the demands and ultimate sacrifices the British people had to make along the way. The book also includes tales of conscientious objectors - a topical subject with 2016 marking the centenary of conscription.Studying how these herculean efforts to clothe and save the troops affected Leeds and its inhabitants, this is a timely reminder of the people of Leeds' dedication, skill and bravery. 100 illustrations

The first detailed chronicle, with photos included, of the four battalions of riflemen who left Leeds for the Western Front. The full wartime story of the “Leeds Pals” has never been told. This volume describes their volunteer origins and how they came to be woven into the social fabric of Leeds from where they drew their enduring esprit de corps, discipline, and resolve. It takes the reader on a journey across the Western Front of the Great War, contrasting the first line battalion’s lot, to stand in the mud of Ypres and endure all without breaking, with the second line battalion’s blooding at Bullecourt and transformation as part of an elite assault division that went on to occupy Germany. It is told, in part, by those who were there and experienced the fear, elation, and sadness of loss, and who took strength from their volunteer ethos and their common origins in Leeds. All the Leeds Rifles’ main battles are described in detail as are the helter-skelter actions of the last one hundred days of mobile warfare and escalating casualties, when the defeated but still defiant German army found itself in full and final retreat. Follow the fortunes of these enfants de Yorkshire, these Leeds Lads, as they speak out from the pages of history with a very familiar accent.

The British Army’s losses on the opening day of the Battle of the Somme - 1 July 1916 - amounted to some 57,000 men killed, wounded or missing. Few units, however, suffered as terribly as the famous ‘Pals’ battalions, raised from volunteers who had flocked to answer Lord Kitchener’s ‘Call to Arms’. In the North of England particularly, whole cities and towns went into mourning as news of that awful first day’s casualties came through. What is less well-known is that some of these battalions were brought up to strength with reinforcements - often from the cities in which they had been raised - and sent back into action again and again This is the story of one such battalion, the Leeds Pals, which by the war’s end in 1918, was described as having been ‘four times wiped out but fighting to the end’. It is a story which traces, in great and fascinating detail, the raising and training of the battalion in and around Leeds, their service in Egypt before being sent to France in December 1915, their heavy losses in their baptism of fire on the Somme, 1916, in the Battle of Arras a year later, and during the German offensives of March and April 1918. Based upon the accounts of survivors, private diaries, letters and papers, official archives, contemporary newspaper accounts, and a wealth of unpublished photographs, it is a story of patriotism, enthusiasm, humor, and great courage. Ultimately, however, it is a tale of great tragedy, for though the Leeds Pals took part in the final advance to victory, their three years in France had cost them 733 men killed, 1,861 wounded and 776 missing or captured.

A Guide To British Military History written by Ian F. W. Beckett and has been published by Pen and Sword this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-30 with History categories.

What exactly is military history? Forty years ago it meant battles, campaigns, great commanders, drums and trumpets. It was largely the preserve of military professionals and was used to support national history and nationalism. Now, though, the study of war has been transformed by the war and society approach, by the examination of identity, memory and gender, and a less Euro-centric and more global perspective. Generally it is recognised that war and conflict must be integrated into the wider narrative of historical development, and this is why Ian Becketts research guide is such a useful tool for anyone working in this growing field. It introduces students to all the key debates, issues and resources. While European and global perspectives are not neglected, there is an emphasis on the British experience of war since 1500. This survey of British military history will be essential reading and reference for anyone who has a professional or amateur interest in the subject, and it will be a valuable introduction for newcomers to it.

Soldiers Lives Through History The Middle Ages written by Clifford J. Rogers and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-04-30 with History categories.

The most dangerous arms in the world are those of horse and lance, because there is no means of stopping them, wrote a 15th-century commander, Jean de Bueil. From the fall of the Roman Empire to the end of the 15th century, the men (and a few women in disguise) who reported for military service or who led other men, scouted and skirmished, plundered and burned. If they did not slaughter the peasants they met, they took them prisoner to be sold as slaves or ransomed at heavy cost. It was a brutal time. Rogers illuminates the history of medieval soldiers in wartime and in peacetime, describing the lives of those who attacked, and those who defended, the fortified castles, towns, and lands of Europe and beyond in the Middle Age.
