In a world of chaos and disease, one group of driven, idiosyncratic geniuses envisioned a universe that ran like clockwork. They were the Royal Society, the men who made the modern world. At the end of the seventeenth century, sickness was divine punishment, astronomy and astrology were indistinguishable, and the world’s most brilliant, ambitious, and curious scientists were tormented by contradiction. They believed in angels, devils, and alchemy yet also believed that the universe followed precise mathematical laws that were as intricate and perfectly regulated as the mechanisms of a great clock. The Clockwork Universe captures these monolithic thinkers as they wrestled with nature’s most sweeping mysteries. Award-winning writer Edward Dolnick illuminates the fascinating personalities of Newton, Leibniz, Kepler, and others, and vividly animates their momentous struggle during an era when little was known and everything was new—battles of will, faith, and intellect that would change the course of history itself.

Best friends, a crafty killer, and an ice-cold mystery… When Leia Peterson discovers a forgotten box filled with childhood wishes, she knows exactly how to honor her late friend’s memory—by making one last wish come true. With her best friend, Kat, by her side (and their lucky tacky earrings for good measure), Leia trades her sensible Seattle life for a weekend at the Northern Magic Ice Festival, where a hotel carved entirely from ice promises the adventure of a lifetime. But their whimsical winter getaway takes a sinister turn when the festival’s star—the legendary “Ice King”—vanishes during the signature sculpting competition. Between suspicious “accidents” and sabotaged sculptures, it’s clear someone’s determined to keep the remaining ice artists from claiming the prize. Armed with nothing but their wits and their warmest winter boots, Kat and Leia find themselves tracking a killer through snowy landscapes and frozen corridors. Their suspect list is as slippery as ice, and each new clue leads them deeper into the hotel’s glittering maze. With the body count rising and time running out, these unlikely detectives are about to prove that best friends make the best crime-solving team.

There is hardly any university, college, or even high school left where they do not teach Darwinism—and rightly so. Yet, most of these places do more preaching than teaching. They teach more than they should, and at the same time, they teach less than they should. Most books on Darwinism are either oriented on biology or philosophy, but this book tries to combine both approaches, so it explains the biological aspects for (future) philosophers as well as the philosophical aspects for (future) biologists. It leaves Darwinism intact, but removes the “sting” that many of its opponents dislike. In what Verschuuren calls “The Good” parts of Darwin’s legacy, the author explores what Darwin’s great contributions are to the study and theory of evolution. At the same time, the book will also delve into the areas where Darwin’s thoughts were not so perfect or even wrong, especially in a philosophical sense – “The Not So Good” parts of his legacy. Almost all books on the philosophy of biology, and neo-Darwinism in particular, were born in the cradle of logical positivism or linguistic analysis. This book, on the other hand, tries to cross the border between the physical and the meta-physical.

Cinema Religion And The Romantic Legacy written by Paul Coates and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-05 with Body, Mind & Spirit categories.
Cinema, Religion and the Romantic Legacy surveys the ways in which notions of religion and spirituality have impinged upon the cinema. Cinema is conceived as a post-Romantic form for which religion and spirituality can be unified only problematically. While inspecting many of the well-established themes and topoi of writing on religion and film (such as films about priests and 'Christ-figures') it also seeks to problematize them, focusing primarily upon the issues of religious representation foregrounded by such European directors as Kieslowski and Godard. Coates draws on theories of theologians, philosophers and cultural and literary critics including: Otto, Kant, Schiller and Girard. Addressing the relationship between religion and spirituality from a film studies specialist's perspective, this book offers all those concerned with film, media or religious studies an invaluable examination of artistic interaction with the theological and aesthetic issues of representation and representability. Paul Coates is Reader in Film Studies at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, and author of many books including: The Gorgon's Gaze (CUP), Film at the Intersection of High and Mass Culture (CUP), The Story of the Lost Reflection (Verso).
