Excerpt from Lives and Legends of English Saints In presenting to the public this treatise on the "Lives and Legends of English Saints," which is intended to form a prelude to further volumes on the holy men and women belonging to the other parts of the United Kingdom, I should like to say a few words, first as to its title and arrangement, and lastly as to its subject. I am well aware that there are many persons who will accept the life of a Saint with comparative readiness, but who will exclaim in horror at the credulity of those who can accept a legend or a miracle. And yet their attitude, in my humble opinion at least, appears somewhat irrational. I naturally do not wish to imply that every - I might almost say any - legend is to be accepted without reserve, but I would affirm that almost every legend contains some germ at least of truth, in that it indicates - though often in an allegorical form some characteristic of the Saint in question, or, more rarely, a poetical exposition of some familiar truth of Holy Scripture. Excerpt from Saint Berin, the Apostle of Wessex: The History, Legends, and Traditions of the Beginning of the West-Saxon Church Winchester took away whatever importance may have been acquired by the first West Saxon See-town. Then there remained no great church at Dorchester to treasure its annals; and when Bishop Daniel of Winchester was supplying Venerable Bede with notes of West Saxon history, there was little that he could discover about the beginnings of his own bishopric. Necessarily, too, among the foremost founders of our Church, all other figures are overshadowed by that of St. Augustine, who first brought Christianity to the English. Indeed the names of the early Northumbrian bishops, Paulinus and Aidan, Chad and Wilfrid, are better known than that of Berin, partly because of the dignity to which the See of York afterwards attained, and partly because Northumbria became the first great seat of English learning, and thus its records became ample. Even at Winchester the fame of St. Berin, who lived far away upon the Thames, was eclipsed in the eyes of churchmen of the next ages by the memory of their own bishop, St. Swithun; and while they revered their founder and honoured his bones, they looked to their local saint with still deeper reverence and gave him the more splendid enshrinement.
