Between the 13th and the 15th centuries, the Italian towns witnessed the rise of craft-guilds, which soon provided themselves with specific written statutes. The Woodworkers' Guild was no exception. Directly influenced by their customers, they gradually quit creating multi-purpose furnishings and started to design them for more and more specialized tasks; thus the modern furniture came to light, sort of a mirror of the new bourgeois society, strictly affected by the style and trend of the moment. The evolution of such a scenario went at the same pace of the wood technology, as also the heritage of work processes was soon forced to change, in order to adapt to the refined needs of the market. Some innovations, well traceable in details, proved to be revolutionary and decisive at the same time. By interpreting artefacts, iconography and genuine wooden relics, the author aims at supporting re-enactors, going over a number of conceptual patterns and handcraft techniques, the very same employed by Medieval and Renaissance joinery masters who gave birth to true masterpieces.

As for the wood transformation processes, the generic use of a single archaic device is a totally insufficient requirement when you claim to be displaying the artisan tool kit of any past era in an adequate and complete manner. Bygone tools underwent a precise development, as well as the handcraft techniques and the purposes for which they were designed. The author not only retraces the history of the main tools used by carpenters, but also describes in detail the tasks they were meant to perform, in the light of the available sources. This is, first of all, a useful guide to better understand the setup of a hypothetical joiner’s workshop through the ages; besides, it can also be considered as an illustrated handbook, primarily addressed to the historical Re-enactors as well as to anybody willing to undertake woodworking projects without drawing upon modern devices, just sticking to the genuine modus operandi of our ancestors. Often considered to be “the most barbaric among barbarian populations”, the Lombards actually boast one of the most prosperous and complex civilizations of the Migration Period, able to bequeath refined cultural and artistic treasures, as well as enchanting crafts. This paper aims at focusing on menswear, a cornerstone of the Lombard culture which used to be an essential expression of status for the German societies. The main goal is to offer a consistent and useful summary of the historical data, providing the reader with an up-to-date bibliographic support and a series of reconstructive interpretations, both encouraging a critical approach to the subject and helping the work of mostly any meticulous re-enactor. Textile materials, colors and clothing are described using documentary, archaeological and iconographic sources from the Lombard kingdom in Italy, comparing them with the evidence pertaining to Germanic Europe and the neighboring Mediterranean world. In addition, the author revisits the currently known theories on the spatha suspension belt, a basic element of the armed man equipment.

Treatise On Elegant Living written by Honoré de Balzac and has been published by Wakefield Handbooks this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Fiction categories.

Honoré de Balzac's 1830 Treatise on Elegant Living was a keystone text on dandyism, preceding Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly's Anatomy of Dandyism (1845) and Charles Baudelaire's "The Dandy" (in The Painter of Modern Life, 1863), and marking an important shift from the early dandyism of the British Regency to the intellectual and artistic dandyism of nineteenth-century France. The Treatise is the first true philosophical expression of dandyism, and is full of well-crafted aphorisms: "Elegant living is, in the broad acceptance of the term, the art of animating repose," runs one classic definition of dandyism, and "One must have studied at least as far as rhetoric to lead an elegant life" asserts the importance of verbal pirouette and dexterous quipping to the dandy. Further embellished with anecdotes and historical and personal illustrations, Balzac's Treatise even features a fictitious encounter with the original dandy himself, Beau Brummell. Never before translated into English, this witty tract makes for an illuminating cornerstone to Balzac's Human Comedy (which was originally to have included a never-completed four-part philosophical "Pathology of Social Life"). Above all, it represents a decisive moment in the history of dandyism, and an entertaining exposition on the profundities of what lies deepest within all of us: our appearance.

Located in the heel of the Italian boot, the Salento region was home to a diverse population between the ninth and fifteenth centuries. Inhabitants spoke Latin, Greek, and various vernaculars, and their houses of worship served sizable congregations of Jews as well as Roman-rite and Orthodox Christians. Yet the Salentines of this period laid claim to a definable local identity that transcended linguistic and religious boundaries. The evidence of their collective culture is embedded in the traces they left behind: wall paintings and inscriptions, graffiti, carved tombstone decorations, belt fittings from graves, and other artifacts reveal a wide range of religious, civic, and domestic practices that helped inhabitants construct and maintain personal, group, and regional identities. The Medieval Salento allows the reader to explore the visual and material culture of a people using a database of over three hundred texts and images, indexed by site. Linda Safran draws from art history, archaeology, anthropology, and ethnohistory to reconstruct medieval Salentine customs of naming, language, appearance, and status. She pays particular attention to Jewish and nonelite residents, whose lives in southern Italy have historically received little scholarly attention. This extraordinarily detailed visual analysis reveals how ethnic and religious identities can remain distinct even as they mingle to become a regional culture.
