A geografia brasileira rompeu a cortina do século XX e se iniciou no século XXI ávida por se redescobrir. Não são poucos os geógrafos que, com esmero – e com afinco – dedicam-se a reler os clássicos. Muitos geógrafos contemporâneos dizem: “a salvação da geografia está nos clássicos”. Ou: “sem uma fidelidade com a origem, o destino pode ser embaraçoso”. Expedientes como o trabalho de campo, as expedições coletivas debruçando-se sobre fronteiras desconhecidas; a validação de croquis e da observação se somam à outras atividades, como o mapeamento digital; a elaboração de cartografias participativas; a elaboração de textos videográficos, documentários, inclusive Instalações geográficas. A complexificação espacial de uma sociedade mundializada desafia os geógrafos no processo de leitura. Ainda mais sabendo que o sujeito que lê tem a seu alcance um mar de signos. É, por isso, de certa maneira, atropelado por um carrossel de imagens e de informações. Aproximar a observação, a leitura e a interpretação numa única empresa tornou-se um empreendimento difícil, contudo com maiores possibilidades de se efetivar. É desse quadro complexo e alvissareiro que este livro enuncia um certame de textos mirando o propósito de se experimentar LEITURAS GEOGRÁFICAS. A diversidade, a criatividade, a ligação de autores contemporâneos com clássicos; o uso de desenhos, crônicas, fotografias, romances, poesias, autobiografia, certificam o modo pelo qual, não apenas o geógrafo, mas qualquer outro profissional, vê-se impelido a lidar com a leitura. Ou com leituras. Conforme tem expressado a filósofa Marcia Tiburi, o contraponto à consecução de um pensamento autoritário e fascista que ronda o atual período, é o diálogo. Àquele que se põe ao diálogo deseja aprender, jamais faz da leitura uma confirmação prévia de seus valores e de seus saberes. Estamos aqui propondo um diálogo.

O Café com Leitura(s) é um projeto multidisciplinar que tem por objetivo promover debates sobre as diversas práticas de leitura. Realizado em 2006. - II Café com Leitura "Leitura e subjetividade: os desafios de ler na sociedade da pressa". Realizado em 19 de Novembro de 2007. - III Café com Leitura "Leitura: desafios e práticas para a formação do sujeito contemporâneo". Realizado no dia 04 de dezembro de 2009. - IV Café com Leitura "Preconceitos em Leituras". Realizado 08 junho de 2010. - V Café com Leitura "Leitura do mundo pela janela literária". Realizado no dia 17 de junho de 2011. - VI Café com Leitura (s) e I Seminário de Leitura (s), Espaço e Sujeito "Leituras Fragmentadas e construção de leitores". Este veio com novidade, pois integrou o I Seminário de Leitura (s), Espaço e Sujeito, e na palavra leitura acrescentou-se letra "s" entre parênteses que significa as múltiplas discussões em torno da leitura. Foi realizado no dia 30 de novembro de 2012. - VII Café com Leitura (s) e II Seminário de Leitura (s), Espaço e Sujeito "Identidade, Gênero e a Palavra: diferentes práticas de leituras". Realizado no dia 04 de abril de 2014.
