From 1876 to 1915, Edward James Lennox was a formidable force in Toronto’s architectural community. Many of his buildings are still landmarks in a city that continues to evolve. Born and educated in Toronto, Lennox looked to the past for inspiration but was never captured by it. His prototypical Annex houes on Madison Avenue, Old City Hall, and Casa Loma bear witness to his technical expertise and aesthetic sensibilities. Through text and illustrations, this volume tells the story of the a resolute architect whose vision helped shape an emerging city, and who in his time was called the "builder of Toronto." Edward James Lennox, "Builder of Toronto" is the first volume in the Canadian Master Architect series. Each publication will profile the work of an individual Canadian architect. The series editor is Marilyn M. Litvak.

This volume compiles and annotates for the first time the complete correspondence of the eighteenth-century British author Charlotte Lennox, best known for her novel The Female Quixote. Lennox corresponded with famous contemporaries from different walks of life such as James Boswell, David Garrick, Samuel Johnson, and Sir Joshua Reynolds, and she interacted with many other influential figures including her patroness the Countess of Bute, publisher Andrew Millar, and the Reverend Thomas Winstanley. In addition to Lennox’s and her correspondents’ letters, this book presents related documents such as the author’s proposals for subscription editions of her works, her file with the Royal Literary Fund, and a series of poems and stories supposedly composed by her son but perhaps written by herself. In these carefully and extensively annotated documents, Charlotte Lennox traces the vagaries in the career of a female writer in the male-dominated eighteenth-century literary marketplace. The introduction situates Lennox in the context of contemporaneous print culture and specifically examines the contentious question of the authorship of The Female Quixote, Lennox’s experimentation with various forms of publication, and her appeals for charity to the Royal Literary Fund when she was impoverished towards the end of her life. The author who emerges from Charlotte Lennox was an active, assertive, innovative, and independent woman trying to find her place—and make a literary career—in eighteenth-century Britain. Thus, this volume makes an important contribution to the history of female authorship, literary history, and eighteenth-century studies.

Almost all of Berkely's later writings follow, and then there are four interviews he gave in the 1970s. After Berkeley's death, Dickinson interviewed performers, composers, family and friends for a BBC Radio 3 documentary, and the complete recorded discussions are transcribed"--Publisher's description.

Daniel's story is one of extraordinary faith in God lived out at the pinnacle of executive power. It tells of four teenage friends, born in the tiny state of Judah about twenty-six centuries ago, but captured by Nebuchadnezzar, emperor of Babylon. Daniel describes how they eventually rose to the top echelons of administration. Daniel and his friends did not simply maintain their private devotion to God; they maintained a high-profile witness in a pluralistic society antagonistic to their faith. That is why their story has such a powerful message for us. Society tolerates the practice of Christianity in private and in church services, but it increasingly deprecates public witness. If Daniel and his compatriots were with us today they would be in the vanguard of the public debate. What was it that gave that ancient foursome, Daniel and his three friends, the strength and conviction to be prepared, often at great risk, to swim against the flow?

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 We humans are insatiably curious. We have been asking questions since the dawn of history. We’ve especially been asking the big questions about origin and destiny: Where do I come from and where am I going. Their importance is obvious. #2 There is great interest in building systems that can do all that human intelligence can do, which is artificial general intelligence. Some believe that AGI will surpass human intelligence within a relatively short time, and will function as a god. #3 The future implications of work on artificial intelligence are not limited to scientists. They affect everyone, and it is important that philosophers, ethicists, theologians, cultural commentators, and artists get involved in the debate. #4 The term AI was coined in a summer school held at the mathematics department of Dartmouth University in 1956. It is used to describe the intelligent machines that are the goal, as well as the science and technology that are aiming at that goal.
