Leo Trotzki nimmt in der Geschichte des Sozialismus im 20. Jahrhundert eine herausragende Stellung ein. Nach der Auflösung der Sowjetunion, der Restauration des Kapitalismus in China und der Diskreditierung des Stalinismus und seiner maoistischen Variante erweist sich der Trotzkismus als der Marxismus und revolutionäre Sozialismus des 21.
