Leonardo Da Vinci And The Art Of Sculpture written by Gary M. Radke and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Art categories.

"Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) is renowned as a painter, designer, draftsman, architect, engineer, scientist, and theorist. His work as a sculptor is not commonly acknowledged, and many have argued that Leonardo believed that sculpture was an inferior art form ("of lesser genius than painting"). Challenging and overturning these assumptions, Leonardo da Vinci and the Art of Sculpture looks at the sculptural projects that the artist undertook, as well as the late Renaissance sculptures that were indebted to him." "Leonardo consistently drew inspiration from ancient sculpture, admired the work of such contemporary sculptural innovators as Donatello, and even trained under Andrea del Verrocchio, the preeminent bronze sculptor of late 15th-century Florence. Furthermore, Leonardo spent many years of his life working on two larger-than-life-sized horse sculptures - Sforza and Trivulzio - monuments to Francesco Sforza, the Duke of Milan, and to Gian Giacomo Trivulzio, his sucessor. Although neither was completed, the authors argue that these equestrian monuments show how Leonardo was intensely engaged with the design dilemmas of representing a horse rearing on its hind legs. Another highlight of the book is a group of new images of the John the Baptist Preaching to a Levite and a Pharisee, a recently restored large-scale work in the Florentine Baptistery that clearly demonstrates Leonardo's collaboration with Giovanni Francesco Rustici." --Book Jacket.

"Two of Leonardo's notebooks, having been officially lost since 1830, were rediscovered in the Biblioteca Nacional, Madrid, in 1965... On the basis of the wealth of new material in the notebooks, a group of the world's leading Vincians contributed to a reassessment of the many facets of Leonardo's genius, a large-scale collection of essays, which was published as The Unknown Leonardo. The present book...is reprinted in smaller format from that voluminous work"--from Introduction (page 7).

Learn how to draw and paint from the master himself! A Treatise on Painting is a selection of Leonardo da Vinci's manuscripts entered in his notebooks under the general heading "On Painting." The documents collected by Francesco Melzi sometime before 1542 were first printed in Italian and French as "Trattato Della Pittura" by Raffaello du Fresne in 1651. The purpose of the treatise was to demonstrate that painting was a science. Leonardo's enthusiastic research of expression and character shows in his observation of laughing and weeping. About which he notes that the only difference between the two emotions regarding the "motion of the features" (facial) is "the ruffling of the brows, which is added in weeping, but more elevated and extended in laughing." The full range of Leonardo's genius is revealed in this elegant book, which reproduces for the first time many unfamiliar drawings from the masters hand as well as more widely known works. Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was arguably the greatest draftsman in the history of Western art. Best known as a painter, he also excelled as sculptor, architect, musician, anatomist, botanist, engineer, geologist, and mapmaker. But since he completed few of his projects, most of his work is known to us only through his drawings and notes. This selection of 100 sheets from the collection at Windsor Castle are presented in five sections covering major periods of Leonardo's life. Included in Martin Clayton's authoritative text is a discussion of the master's drawing materials, the development of his style, and the types and functions of his drawings.
