Nel corso dei suoi studi giovanili, Leopardi si avvicinò alla lingua ebraica tra la fine del 1813 e l’inizio del 1814, negli stessi mesi in cui avviò l’apprendimento del greco. Se però dei suoi studi classici si ha un quadro chiaro, del suo rapporto con l’ebraico si sa decisamente meno. La lingua veterotestamentaria esercita negli anni un’influenza silenziosa ma profonda, agendo carsicamente dalle prime prove di traduzione fino al Ciclo di Aspasia. Leopardi studia l’ebraico da autodidatta, affidandosi a grammatiche, lessici e bibbie poliglotte presenti nella biblioteca paterna; nel 1816 questa conoscenza libresca si misura con la traduzione dei Salmi e del Libro di Giobbe, senza che questi tentativi vedano mai la luce. Sarà solo con la scrittura multiforme e stratificata dello Zibaldone che Leopardi si confronterà realmente con questa lingua, mettendo a frutto le competenze critiche e filologiche acquisite: dell’ebraico ci consegna un’immagine aurorale e suggestiva, a partire dalla sua morfologia povera, dalle sue strutture grammaticali imprecise, fino ad arrivare a una visione che abbraccia lo stile della poesia biblica in tutta la sua forza immaginifica. La sublimità delle espressioni salmistiche, della loro sovrabbondanza vitale, e il potenziale evocativo degli episodi biblici, cari a Leopardi sin dall’infanzia, si fondono nello stile imperfetto di questa lingua e dei suoi testi, risalenti all’alba della scrittura e dunque della civiltà, ancora fanciulli e portatori di una creatività inesauribile.
