Comment le prince Léopold est-il préparé à sa tâche ? Est-il vraiment prêt lorsqu’il monte sur le trône en 1934 ? Quels faits marquants jalonnent son règne ? Pendant les années de guerre, quels sont les mobiles de ses choix politiques et pourquoi la communication est-elle si difficile avec le gouvernement belge de Londres ? Quelle multiplicité d’images a-t-on de ce roi controversé dans la Belgique d’après-guerre ? Quels sont les groupes et les organisations qui prennent sa défense ? Quelles sont les véritables causes de l’abdication ? Que fait-il ensuite ? Le livre ne se referme en effet pas sur la question royale. Au moment de son abdication, en 1951, Léopold n’a que 49 ans. Ses années d’après-règne, consacrées à l’ethnologie et à la photographie, sont donc également relatées dans ce livre.
