In Europe, Africa is often called the forgotten continent. The collapse of states, violent conflicts and natural disasters shape the public perception of Africa in Europe, while the political perspectives tend to be grossly neglected. This book wants to challenge this image in the eyes of many people through a profound analysis of main aspects of African-European relations (e.g. economics, migration, HIV / AIDS). In particular, it will be discussed what can be done to improve the relations between both continents and to develop a constructive and genuine cooperation. The book is based on the presentations and discussions of a congress of the Jesuit Scribani Network.

Global Education is an area of policy, practice, research and educational advocacy. It is an umbrella term that encompasses a variety of areas with differing terminologies: development education, human rights education, education for sustainable development, education for global citizenship. Global Education has become increasingly central to education policy and practice. With this book GENE - Global Education Network Europe - marks 15 years of its work, networking policymakers for increased and improved Global Education in Europe. The book explores key issues in contemporary Global Education in Europe: issues of national strategy, of structure development, of policy learning and engagement within education systems. It outlines challenges in research, practice, policy and conceptual development, through detailed analysis of national and international case studies. The book will be of use to policymakers, educationalists, researchers, and practitioners in the fields of education, international development, human rights and sustainability. GENE intends it as a contribution to the ongoing dialogue in this field, towards the day when all people in Europe - in solidarity with peoples globally - might have access to quality Global Education.

Studies of aspects of historical interaction between Germany, Africa and black America. This volume brings together fascinating research on the historical interaction between Germany, African nations and Black Americans. Leading scholars explore the influence of German missions, language and culture, politics, and science on Africa and Black America. Essays examine the medieval links between Germany and Africa, encounters between immigrant Germans and America's African population during the colonial era; the influence of German culture and natinalism on African-American social elites studying in Germany throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; Black American musical performers in Weimar Germany; and the shifting contacts among Black Americans, Germany, and Africa as Germany led Western modernization and expansionism during the twentieth century. The authors present a variety of disciplines and use heretofore untapped sources from German, American, and African depositories.

The missionaries have often been accused of having destroyed African cultures, be it deliberately or because they did not understand. The author draws a very different picture in his study of a number of German missionaries in various parts of Tanzania, who had a high appreciation of African culture. He argues that acceptance of inculturation attempts do not depend on race but on role, and the same applies to both Black and White.
