Le chômage, la violence et l’insécurité, l’abêtissement et les déraisons allant jusqu’au fanatisme, tout cela n’est pas propre à la France, mais les intellectuels de France ont-ils, sur ces phénomènes, une influence, et est-elle positive ou funeste ? Voilà les questions de ce livre. Elles me paraissent essentielles, décisives même, car il s’agit de déterminer comment, en France, l’intelligence et l’érudition sont mises – ou ne le sont pas – au service des améliorations économiques et sociales nécessaires et d’une organisation politique bénéfique pour la majorité des Français. C’est, dit de manière plus abstraite, le problème du rapport entre le Savoir et le Pouvoir. C’est la belle et difficile question de la relation entre la Connaissance (des philosophes et des experts) et l’Action (des politiques). C’est encore la rencontre entre le Singulier (du penseur, toujours de son époque et de ses conditionnements) et l’Universel (de la vérité, c’est-à-dire de l’adéquation des discours divers avec le réel unique).
