Pres de deux siecles de collecte et de recherche sur les formes narratives orales et ecrites berberes sont examines dans ce travail qui offre une reflexion limpide et prenante sur la formation du champ des etudes berberes. Les materiaux litteraires produits par les Imazighen (Berberes) dans le Maghreb et en Europe sont donc presentes tandis que l'on rend compte de l'acquisition des textes et de leur analyse et interpretation. La premiere partie illustre le travail de collecte effectue dans la periode coloniale ainsi que la multiplication des etudes et des perspectives dans la periode contemporaine. L'ouvrage traite aussi de la creation d'un espace linguistique et culturel multilingue, mais coherent dans son developpement, en proposant l'exemple de l'espace litteraire kabyle comme espace litteraire et culturel multilingue dans lequel les auteurs donnent expression a l'identite individuelle et collective (affirmee, critiquee, rejetee) fondee sur les liens familiaux, le pays, et la langue. Un panorama des aires les plus 'exploitees' et de celles ou la collecte et la recherche sont encore dans un etat presque initial conclue la premiere partie. Des aspects centraux de la composition narrative berbere sont consideres dans la seconde partie : les divers types d'analyse des recits et le systeme litteraire, la production ecrite ancienne et actuelle, les relations de genre feminin/masculin dans les recits oraux et ecrits ainsi que la 'grande division' entre les etudes berberes et les etudes francophones. Le dernier chapitre s'ouvre sur les developpements recents de l'ecriture en tarifit et tachelhyt au Maroc et la nouvelle production immigree aux Pays-Bas dans leurs liens avec d'autres formes de la production culturelle (theatre, films, videos, et Internet) cree au Maroc, en Algerie, et par la diaspora berbere en Europe.
